Fox Adds Fuel to Summer Fire
Wed, Apr 9, 2003 10:58 AM PDT
LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - The new Fox Networks Group action sports channel has chose its name: Fuel. Let the confusion begin between Fuel and the new MuchMusic moniker, Fuse.
Set to launch on July 1, Fuel will be available on the digital sports tiers of DirecTV, Time Warner Cable and smaller operators. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the net network will arrive in at least 2 million households.
Fuel will target the Ritalin/Mountain Dew generation of hyperactive young adult males into extreme sports, but it won't cash in on the Fox corporate name.
"It was very consciously an effort on our part not to be seen as just another offshoot of the Fox Empire, but something that is a start-up project that has its own personality and position, and isn't seen as overly corporate," says David Sternberg, general manager of Fuel and senior vp of emerging networks at Fox.
Fuel, which will still get a hefty promotional push from various Fox sister networks, will begin with 40% original programming, while the other 60% will be shows licensed from international sources that have yet to air in the United States.
Among the first shows on Fuel's original slate are the action sports highlight show "10 Count," the amateur action sports show "Project Detention" and a variety of music-oriented shows including "Fuel Live Concert Series," which seems self-explanatory. Fuel will also partner with Fox Sports Net on "54321" and on professional surfing events.
