Hello first post so go easy on me :)
I recently got free hd equipment upgrade from my hr10-250 to hr22nc-100 . Thanks for this forum. I got a AM21 box to receive ota hd channels. The problem is I can't get my HR22 to change the TV Resolution to 720p or 1080i on the ota HD programs. It is stuck on 480p for my ota hd channels. I can change the tv resolution between 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i, on directv channels without any problems.
I double checked my setting and make sure the 720p and 1080i box is checked under TV resolution tab. The problems stays the same on both the component and HDMI output. As usual, the directv customer support is not very helpful. They gave me a speech on how the receiver can tell if a program is hd or not and adjust the tv resolution accordingly. If they are right, does this mean my receiver is too smart for its own good? It should just do what I say instead of relying on some program information.
Confused
Are you sure the locals you are trying it on are broadcasting in 720p or 1080i?

turn native off and use original format in hdmi menu. you can then cycle through.
think thats what you're asking.

i have native off and original format on the tv resolution menu already. sorry forgot to mention that. I can cycle through on the directv channel without problem but I can't do it on the ota hd channel with the same tv resolution settings.
I am pretty sure my local channel is broadcasting in 1080i. My hr10-250 and my tv build in tuner indicate that. Is that anyway I can check for sure? I live in Austin TX
If they come in on your HR10 in 1080i that station should come in on the AM21 in 1080i as well.
Have you tried doing a menu reset? Might be worth a shot to reset things a bit.

Go through OTA setup again and this will probably clear the problem.

Contact the station and ask.

When I reset the receiver and the settings, I went through the ota setup again. Still has the same problem.:( I don't think I need to specify the ota channels are hd. They are the -1 channels

Tried that already. I found out 2 stations are definitely broadcasting 1080i. Not to mention my hr10-250 and my tv has no problem displaying these stations in 720p (down-convert from 1080i)

Try native on and see what that does

Tried that also. It makes a difference on the directv channels but not on the ota channels

ok, I don't know if this is possible or not.
could your antenna itself be the issue?
I don't see mention of what antenna you are using.
also, how many units are being fed by this antenna and how is it hooked together?
if the antenna was hooked straight to the am21 does it still act this way?

"-1" channels are usually sub-channels and not broadcast in HD at all. Digital, yes. HD, no.

actually -1 is usually the main HD OTA channel.. -2,-3.. are the sub channels and are almost all digital SD..

Good point. I'll add that to my signature. I use a Terk HDTV i . I split the signal to two and send one to the tv and the other one to my dvr. I tried hooking the antenna straight to the am21. No change with the problem.

Thanks for your help. I suppose you don't have my problem with your HR21/AM21 and the ota-hd channels.
BTW. I am pretty sure my HR22 see the ota hd signal in 1080i . When I switch to the ota hd channels, the HR22 displays a message in the lower right corner of the screen asking me to change the resolution to 1080i for better quality. I tried pushing the res button on the HR22 and also the format button the on remote. It just stayed on the 480p resolution

Only thing I can think to try is check all the res boxes in setup and turn on native.. see what happens..
I haven't seen this with my 21-700/am21 combo.
Seems like it knows it's in HD but isn't switching res for some reason..

there was some posts about that last sentence awhile back, I'll see if I can find them and it may help.

just for heck of it, do you have 480 UNCHECKED in resolutions? wondering if that affects it.

I tried switch on and off the native feature. It seems to make a difference with DirecTV channels but not with ota hd channels.

Not sure if I have one. I have a DirecTV Tech coming out tomorrow for another problem. I'll see if he has one in his truck. I'll also share this problem with him. Just not sure if he can do anything about it . From past experience, those technicians are much less helpful than this forum.

Use the RES button on the front-panel (not the remote) just to see if you can force the receiver into a different mode. The problem could be in the HR22 as well as the AM21.

I tried resetting using the menu reset, reset button, as well as unplugging the power then plug it back it. No change to the problem

Sadly installers almost never have AM21s as they are meant to be direct order from Directv and customer installed.

I have a spare am21. They accidentally ordered me two.
Have you tried using that one then? Seems like a quick thing to try and it could very easily be the issue if you have a bad AM21.

I think I figured it out. The reason the tv resolution button does not work for ota hd has something to do with me not having HD access service on my account. I had a technician come out today for another problem. Through troubleshooting, he activated my HD access. The RES button works after he left. I only subscribe to JadeWorld and DVR service on my account. No DirecTV HD services. The tech didn't fix my main problem but that's another story.
