I have bean preparing the last few months to make a career change to Network Administration. I have always ben a bit of a techie, when I finaly decided what I wanted to do when I grew up (I am now 48 ;) ) I decided to do something in computers because it allows me to do what I enjoy with the potential to make a good living at the same time. I am currently working toward getting a MCSA certification and possibly a MCSE, the last few weeks I have ben studying hard for that first MCP Windows 2000 Professional exam, I took the exam today and Passed IT! Yahoooo!!!!!!! :) :D  :hi:

I am also currently out of work and looking for that first computer job, looking primarily in the Chattanooga TN and Dalton GA area, however would consider Atlanta and other areas close enough to Chattanooga where I could come home at least on my days off.

This is good news! I hope you continue the studying and things go your way...

Just wanted to give my opinion though as I to went the M$ route at one point.

I would advise looking into the LPIC and Cisco Certifications as they seem more useful to me in this field and mean way more then the M$ certifications. I do not even get asked about M$ certifications anymore as they seem more and more common. It would be good to get this and then move on to bigger and better things!

Good luck on what you are trying to accomplish and I wish you continued success.

One thing to look out for is the sales reps of these training companies lie thru their teeth (worked several years in the training industry) and they imply that if you get a certain certification (not the one that requires 2 classes but the one that requires 7 classes they can sell) you will be earning 75K a year.

Going for the lower level Cisco certification will definately help, but the higher level certification will do little for you without any real life experience. The Administrator certs probabl will help but the Engineer certs usually require a ton of experience to get past the interview portion of the job search process.

I plan on working toward MCSA and MCSE as I gain some practical experience, by the time I get those I hope to have some experience too. I hope to take the Server exam in a week or two, I just want to get my foot in the door and gain a little experience for now. Once I am working I may consider a Cisco certification too. I started out by taking some Network classes at a local community collage here in Chattanooga and then I found out about a special program that the VA had here in TN for us vets that payed for a couple additional classes at New Horizons here in Chattanooga, that gave me the extra preparation that prepared me to pass Windows 2000 Professional. I have to say I have ben impressed with New Horizens, the people their have ben great and the labs have really helped.
