This is a discussion thread for the super skip-to-tick feature of the latest national release.
A little bit about this feature:
Use while Fast-Forwarding or Rewinding to go to the next tick mark in the progress bar
After skipping-to-tick, you will still be in Fast-Forward or Rewind
http://www.dbstalk.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=16079&stc=1&d=1224693067 or http://www.dbstalk.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=16080&stc=1&d=1224693074 will jump to the previous tick mark when Rewinding
http://www.dbstalk.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=16076&stc=1&d=1224693058 or http://www.dbstalk.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=16077&stc=1&d=1224693062 will jump to the next tick mark when Fast-Forwarding
http://www.dbstalk.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=16078&stc=1&d=1224693063 returns playback to PLAY mode
This feature is enabled for all users in this release. No additional code is required to enable it.
Note: These buttons http://www.dbstalk.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=16077&stc=1&d=1224693062 http://www.dbstalk.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=16080&stc=1&d=1224693074 do not appear on the DIRECTV remote but may appear on third party remotes.

Commence Discussion!
Ok, since you suggested a discussion, can you please clarify exactly what key strokes are supposed to make it skip to the next tick? I use after market remotes and press the fast forward and hold it and nothing happens. Sometimes I press and release it and press it again and it skips to the next tick. Other times it just goes from fast foward 1 to fast forward 2.

This eliminates the need for press-and-hold to skip forward to the next tick on the bar.
It works like this:
Press {>>} to start fast forwarding.
Then press {>>|} and you will jump to the next tick on the bar.
After you push {>>|} you will still be fast-forwarding, so push {>} to go back to play.
The same applies to rewinding. Use {<<} and {|<<}
I hope that explains it. I know the graphic representation of the buttons is a little crude, sorry for that.
Perfect explanation! I tried it several times and it works everytime. I like the new method much better.
HR21 > HR10-250 in my opinion now. Done and done.
Well done D*. Well done.

About time! Thank you DTV.
Now if only they could sort out the last idiotic "press & hold" function - SLOW MOTION. Perhaps they could do something similar ? i.e. press PAUSE and then the Fast Forward or Advance button could initiate slow motion ?
I got the update last night. At the time, I didn't know about this new super skip, so I was using the old hold method. Am I crazy or does the old method still work?

That is great, now it works like my HR10. :)
Now to fix the Slow Motion implementation.
However, I'd suggest a second press of Pause to start Slow Motion.

Is there a list of all the features that were gained with the update?
Thanks
If you like SUPERSKIPTOTICK, be sure to let DirecTV know how you feel about this Wish List request at the link below:
During FF or RW, UP/DOWN arrows should express to the START or END of a recording.
This is a user-friendly alternative to the currently unreliable PRESS&HOLD of http://www.dbstalk.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=16079&stc=1&d=1224693067 and http://www.dbstalk.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=16076&stc=1&d=1224693058, intended to do the same.

This wasn't new to this release, correct? I was using this prior to yesterday and I have not been participating in the CE releases.
Also, the "cell phone" search capabilities was also working prior to yesterday as well.
Am I missing something?

Am I missing something?I don't believe they were "officially" supported in the last NR. IIRC, you had to enable SKIPTOTICK with a special keyword SEARCH. Now it's on by default. Triple-tap may have only been enabled for DOD.
Also still undocumented, AFAIK, is that triple-tap works when searching for remote codes for TV's and AV components. It expresses you to the start of a letter group on the list. Good for me, since I have a Yamaha receiver. /steve
I now find myself using jump to tick. I had given up on it due to press&hold.
Much nicer now :)

whats good also is if u created bookmarks it will pause at them too.
This is a great feature. Kudos.
I also think this is a validation of the commonly-held belief that Press-And-Hold functions are lame and should be rethought, possibly re-engineered. And that is what they have essentially done with this update: given us a skip-to-tick capability that works easily and reliably and essentially abandoned the PAH approach, which was so lame I even would give up on trying and just wait until FF got where I wanted to be.
So, Phase I, complete, and mission accomplished.
Phase II, should be doing the same thing for slo-mo (abandoning PAH in favor of some other keystroke combo). There's no time quite like the present to make this happen, DTV. It would give you a diversion from the inevitable bad press the lockup fiasco is bringing.

Love that feature... Thank Stuart
Why does everyone love this feature? Not criticizing the feature, just trying to figure out what the big deal is. Most of the "ticks" I have are spaced 15 minutes or so apart in any given program. How is it useful to skip ahead or behind 15 minutes? Now, if they could put an automatic tick mark at the end of every commercial break, that would excite me. Can somebody give me a real life example of what they use this for? I usually just press the 30 second skip four or five times and it takes me right past the commercials. Tell me why I need this. Thanks.

A lot of folks who have been DVR users before the HR2x series came out got used to this feature, and sometimes it is useful to skip ahead or back, especially if you're watching a movie or long sporting event. Sangs, do you "need" this? Certainly not. However, if you want to watch TV this way, the new method makes it easier.

Somtimes I'll fall asleep while a recorded movie is playing, so this feature lets me get to the last part I remember very quickly.
What is a tick? The vertical lines you see in the PROGRESS BAR. I believe they are always spaced at 15 minute intervals. /steve

On really long recordings (like when I was recording the Olympics) they can be 30 minutes.

A lot of times in the evening, I'll put on the channel the news is on, then I'll watch a recording or play video games. Then I'll go back to live TV and rewind back to see the weather. This will make it much easier to go back a half hour or so to get to the weather.
I advocate getting rid of the tick marks. I see they did that on the directvpc. You just click your mouse anywhere on the progress bar.
Something similar should be done on the DVRs. Move the cursor to whereever you want on the progress bar. This could be done with the left and right buttons.

This might be a nice idea if you knew the exact minute mark you were looking for and wanted to get there, but if you don't know that and you just know "generally" where you want to go, it would almost certainly be slower than using the skip-to-tick-then-ff/rw-from-there method that "folks who have been DVR users before the HR2x series came out" became accustomed to on our pre-HR2x DVRs (i.e. our TiVo's; Stewart was vague about it, but I don't have to be). This is a very welcome TiVo-like function.
Question. Has anybody tried to see if this works with bookmarks?

The answer is yes. See this post. (http://www.dbstalk.com/showpost.php?p=1851660&postcount=24)
Something similar should be done on the DVRs. Move the cursor to whereever you want on the progress bar. This could be done with the left and right buttons. We have a similar request on the Wish List. I believe this is either an old REPLAY TV feature, or perhaps a current DISH DVR feature:
OPTION to jump ahead or back in a recording by pressing "3-FF", e.g., to jump ahead 3 minutes, or "1-5-RW" to jump back 15 minutes.
If you like it, please be sure to vote for it at the link below. TIA. /steve

Thanks.Last night for example, it happened on two shows. While trying to skip forward 30 seconds, the unit hangs and then processes the 30 second skips as "press and hold" Now I am at the end of the show and instead of RWD @ 4x back into the show, I hit RWD and replay to jump back instantly instead of having to wait.
Love this added feature

-mkWhat "cursor" might you be referring to, Mike? It's an idea that makes sense in a computer environment, but without a similar sort of interface I'm not sure that it does.
I find skip-to-tick very useful. If you set a bookmark it allows you to get there reliably. Also, I record "The Daily Show" on a 1st-gen Tivo at work and watch it during my lunch hour. I back those recordings up at home. Since they rarely put ep info on them, it's handy to jump to the guest spot (which is sometimes the only thing distinctive) to see if its an ep I've seen or not (since the backups don't automagically delete themselves). Winding in FF is a chore, while skip-to-tick makes it easier.
What "cursor" might you be referring to, Mike? It's an idea that makes sense in a computer environment, but without a similar sort of interface I'm not sure that it does.I had to read it a second time myself, but I believe Mike was referring to using the LEFT/RIGHT ARROWS to slide back and forth across the PROGRESS BAR while in FF or RW. I assume once we "let go", that's where the HR would either FF or RW to.
As an aside, our original Wish List request was to actually use the LEFT, RIGHT, UP and DOWN ARROWS during FF or RW, to SKIP TO PREV TICK, SKIP TO NEXT TICK, SKIP TO BEGINNING and SKIP TO END. Since DirecTV decided to go with REPLAY and ADVANCE instead, we've pared down the request to just ask for UP/DOWN ARROWS for BEGINNING/END.

I'm a big fan of this new feature .. I really didn't like the old way (as I've mentioned a few times in the past) .. Needless to say, DIRECTV got some serious kudos from me when I heard about this feature :)
Credit where due: Finally something WORKS right in a D* box. The skip to tick actually functions the way it's supposed to now. Now get rid of the ridiculous press-and-hold for the slo-mo and give us the same instant response off a dedicated button.
D* is all about progress: you get some every few years.
Rand: Same here, buddy! The sudden leap-to-the-end bug off the :30 skip happens to me in sports shows which kills my entire evening of viewing. The D* box is lucky it's behind two thick glass doors or I woulda kicked its face in dozens of times.
You spend hours assiduously avoiding hearing the score from friends, TV, radio, whatever. Then you turn on D* to start playback and they throw the live game at you in the insert to mess you up even more, but you outsmart em: you know to turn the MUTE on first and hide the live insert video behind your outstretched hand! (I tried PAUSING it it but the system is so buggy you have to hit it 10 times before it works, if ever, and it requires you LOOK AT the video to see if it's frozen yet, and then you see the score!)
Now you watch part of the first quarter, the ads come on, and you tap :30 skip ONCE, TWICE...THR...BAM!!! IT'S THE END OF THE GAME AND THERE'S THE FINAL SCORE. SAYONARA MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL.
The current hardware/software is simply the rotten legacy of a rotten guy: Rupert Murdoch. We're stuck for now with his British Invasion payback-for-the-American-Revolution electronic IEDs, aka the HR-series. With him finally flushed out of the system into the media cesspool of his own making, we finally get a shot next year of a second chance with Tivo.
In inverse proportion to how much of the current hardware/software implementation will be retained is how good it will be.

I'm talking about the mark in the progress bar that shows where you are in the show.
You wouldn't need to press FF, just use the Left and Right arrows to move the "cursor" and the time would move accordingly.
For example, if you were 20 minutes into the show you could "slide" the marker 5 minutes ahead and get to 25 minutes into the show.
Tick marks are not needed.

I can just imagine how glacially slow this would be in a sat receiver. I use it all the time in every single video program on a computer. But I'm happy with the ticks in a DVR, too.
I love this feature, thanks DirecTv.

I would like that (my Blu Ray does that) but I would still want ticks. Think of them as chapter marks of a sort (many DVD burners insert automatic chapter marks at regular time intervals if there are no specific chapters inserted by the user).
Why would they be mutually exclusive?
Or you can have a pop up that asks for a time entry (through they yellow button) and the program jumps to that time.
