It's been a couple of months since the HR22s arrived in stores. So If I wanted to take advantage of the offer I received of a Free HD DVR upgrade, what are the chances NOW that I would get the HR22 vs. the older 21 or 20 models?

And will it be shipped or delivered by a Technician? Do I have a choice? Which method will get me an HR22? And I guess if I get it shipped it's $19.95 shipping, but if a Technician brings it over, there's no additional charge?

HR21 or HR22 is about 50/50 at this point I believe.

HR20 is VERY rare as they are no longer in production, have not heard of anyone getting them in quite awhile. You will need an installer to come out if you do not already have the proper dish/new HD channels.

I already have the new dish when I got an HR20 a year ago.

So does that mean I don't need an installer to come out? or would that save me $20 on shipping?

Is there anything specific that I should do to give myself the best chance of getting an HR22 instead of 21?

Contact D* and ask them for the number to the installation company in your area. Call the installer and ask them to annotate your work order with a 'request' for a specific receiver. That did the trick for me. I got my HR22 installed on the 12th.

Ask DirecTV if they'll reimburse you if you purchase an HR22 at Best Buy. They've done it for people before.

Or, when you talk to D*, ask them to request an HR22-100. They can put it in the tech notes, which is at the bottom of the work order. Then get a confirmation and the number to the local D* Contractor that will install it, and then call them to confirm. Worked out for me. Also, while you're at it, If you need it, ask for a SWM. This way if you don't have a dual coax outlets in the room, you don't have to run a 2nd line. (As long as you have the slimline dish) Good Luck!

Don't want to hijack thread, but have to ask. I am running the HR20-100 now. What is the advantage to the new HR22 unit over what I have?

The HR22 unit has a bigger hard drive which allows for 100 hours of HD recording!

I just got a HR22 to replace my old Tivo HD and a R21 to replace my Sony receiver. No cost. I called up retention CR

I got two HR22's on the upgrade conversion yesterday. The installer had no idea what he had, but after I commented on it he looked around and all he had on his truck were 22's.

I live in Plano near Dallas. Have people been getting the HR22 around here?

I live about 45 miles NE of Dallas and have ordered a DirecTV HD DVR as a replacement for one of my existing H20-100 receivers. I asked that a notation be added to my order specifically for the HR22 DVR model, so I'm anxious to see which model will be installed.

I will provide an update after the installation, currently scheduled in two weeks on Friday, November 7th.

My install was scheduled for today, but it started to rain as soon at the tech got here so I had to reschedule. I had pretty much demanded to get HR22s, but I know that doesn't really mean anything. However, when the tech checked his truck, all four of the boxes that he had were HR22s. So, maybe they've used up all the HR21s (at least in my area).

Well I called DirecTV and set up an installation date and put in a request for an HR22. I did this through retention because I thought I can get get better customer service that way. Then I put in a call to the installer, which is called Connect TV in my area (Los Angeles) took me about 45 minutes on hold to talk to someone there - horrible, horrible customer service. The other 2 times I was on hold probably an hour each before giving up. Anyway, my appointment was from 8am-12pm. at 11:30 no one has shown up yet, and of course I don't hear anything from anyone. I start calling Connect TV. Half an hour later and of course no one there has still picked up my call. So while i am on hold there, I call DirecTV and tell them no one showed up, and I can't even get a hold of the installer company. She tries to get a hold of them and doesn't have any luck either. She was nice enough to give me a $100 credit for my trouble. And eventually got a hold of this unprofessional company, and some guy from there calls me and tells me the guy is late. So he shows up hours later, and the last thing I was expecting from them was an HR22, but believe it or not I actually got one. Very happy about that. It looks so much nicer than the HR20 I had and the much larger hard drive is awesome. DirecTV is a very good company to deal with , but this installer, Connect TV is horrendous. ZERO customer service. I'll file an official complaint to DirecTV about this. I cannot believe that they are the only company DirecTV contracts out to do installations here. It just makes DirecTV look bad, and I hope they do something about this.

Regarding the HR22, looks like they are definitely out there, but you have to ask for it, otherwise it's hit or miss. Do whatever you can and make as many requests as possible for that model to be brought to you. By the way, the DirecTV rep did say that if the installer doesn't bring out an HR22 like I requested, I can refuse it, then go buy it at places like Best Buy or Costco, and DirecTV will fully reimburse me. I should have done that from the beginning, I guess.
