I am trying to use dish along with vista's windows media center. I am having issues where if a channel is on for a couple of minutes, the picture will begin to have large color banding like macrovision recording. I am wondering if there is some sort of copy protection built into the single that undesireable to record shows, I guess the same thing would show up using a TIVO or another type of non DISH pvr. I am close to giving up, and would just like to know if indeed there is no way around it.
thanks

What connection are you using between the Dish receiver and the computer?

I am using the coxial cable out from the receiver(622?) into a Hauppaug winTV PVR-150.

I have three different Hauppauge cards that have never been affected by copy protection, so I think the PVR-150 is probably also immune. My HDD/DVD recorder refused to record National Treasure from PPV but a Hauppage got it. I think you have a different problem, maybe a loose connection. Good luck.

let me ask this, could a problem be with the coaxial able being a high def signal and the card is just SD?
Actually, the coax out from the receiver is SD. Only the component and HDMI outputs are HD.

follow up question: I am also having trouble in that I am getting no Audio in Media Center's LiveTV or recorded TV (however winTV program does have sound). I read on the net somewhere that it could have something to do with AC3, in that MC will use that when available and sometimes that channel is blank for many stations, hence no audio. My question, does the coax cable going into the PVR transfer the AC3? could this be the problem?

Your audio using the RF is only going to be stereo into the WinPVR150. That is the standard.

I don't mean to hijack at all, but I am very interested in watching TV on my Dell laptop. What would I need and would I be able to do it? How hard would it be? Thanks!

You need a USB TV tuner (preferably one that does ATSC and clear QAM).

Can anybody recommend one that has those specs but won't drive me to the broke house?

Check http://www.hauppage.com/index.htm - the WinHVR950 sounds like what you want. Just $79.

Thank you! I just found http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16815293004 this one on Newegg. No reviews on there yet because it seems like it just came out this month. I Google searched and found a favorable review however, especially for bang for the buck. Any of you heard of or tried this one? Thanks!

From the Hauppauge page - There is a WinHVR950Q - this would be the one that has the QAM tuner. If all you need is ATSC (no digital cable) - the first one would be OK.

Is there a way to connect HD digital out from the Dish 722 to my SONY VGC-RC-310G so I can record to the hard drive of my computer, to allow for making an HD recording, then burning it to bluray. It does have a bluray burner built in. I just don't know how to get the HD signals into the computer I would like to record special events that won't be released on bluray (concerts, specials, and such)

HDCP copy protection encrypts the digital HD signals, preventing you from getting them into your computer. It was specifically designed to prevent you from doing that. Content providers do NOT want you to have the ability to make Blu-Rays of their HD content.

Note this uses the component outputs of the HD source.

Only DVI and HDMI. Component is not filtered which is why the Hauppauge HD PVR cited above by scooper works for recording HD.
