Why does the length of the time between ticks vary?

For Example, I recorded two UEFA CL games on Setanta (yes both on the same channel), both games were 2hr recordings.
Game 1 had 30 minutes between ticks
Game 2 had 15 minutes between ticks

Why the difference? I can understand if you are recording a 30 minute show there is a 15 min tick mark and when recording a 2 hour movie it would have 4 ticks but when I record 2 like programs on the SAME channel I get different results.

Even if it was, why should that make a difference in tickmark intervals? I have a daily 1 hour recording that is manually padded a few minutes at the end that always has tickmarks every 15 minutes. Even if a program length varies +/- a few minutes from 2 hours, 1 hour or a half hour long, it should have tickmarks every 15 minutes.

The tickmark interval algorythm is buggy and/or follows poorly thought out rules. I have seen half hour recordings that were missing the tickmarks at the 15 minute mark, and when recordings start getting long (longer than 5 hours or so) tickmarks start getting placed a very odd intervals that are not on half hour or hour boundaries. Tickmarks should always be at 15, 30, 60 minute, or some multiples of an hour intervals.

I'm thinking that 2 hours may be the break point for what to display. If a recording is 2hours and 1 minute it could switch to 30m ticks.

Let's fix the freeze ups first and worry about the ticks later...

It's just about the same as the Tivo ticks. Always been that way. I think someone has assumed that usage of them would be to skip through a program quickly, so it gives longer ticks when the program is longer. I guess if you have other wishes for usage it may not fit.

I haven't tried on the HR21, but on the Tivos it will go up to at least one hour ticks with a very long recording.

Well sometimes on the games over 2 hours its 15 minute ticks and games at or even just under (1:45 games) they are 30 mins.
Can we add this to the Wish List? The ability to manually set tick marks?

15 mins is perfect for me but 30 mins isn't when skimming through a soccer game.
