Are access cards tied to receivers?

I just got a replacement for my HR20-100 today and would like to boot it up - but I don't want to activate it just yet (still waiting on some new BBCs).

Can I put the card from my HR20-100 into the new box HR21-200 just to see if it works?

You can but it won't work. AC and IRD are 'married' only a CSR can change it.

Access cards shipped from DirecTV are only good for 9 days from the day they are shipped so if you leave one in an "unactivated" state for longer than this it will permanently disable itself.

I learned this recently when I had a bad access card replaced in one of my DVR's. (It didn't happen to me but I was advised to activate the new card immediately when it arrived so it wouldn't)

Yes, you CAN put it in & it WILL fully boot up & get you the barker channels (100, 200, etc) but you'll have an card error on the screen. Once you activate it, it will then work as usual.
Done this MANY a time when I have moved existing cards to new receivers, to replace broken units (usually DVR's) so that I can get them downloaded & put thru initial setup, before I take them to the client's house. Save me & my clients time.
