I was wondering if the standard composite audio connections are needed if I use the optical connections to my receiver. I had read somewhere that the optical connection is always on if a cable is installed. Does this negate the need for the standard audio connections? I am trying to minimize the size of the hole i have to drill. :)
Thanks...

You don't need the RCA audio connections if your TOSLINK is engaged. How ever, on some receivers, if you want to record to another device, you still need the analog connections. I'd read your A/V receiver manual to verify this.
Also still need the analog if you have a multi room feature. Which are typically analog outs, which means if you don't have a source with analog coming in, the receiver typically doesn't down convert
