what would it take to improve my pq from my 501 to my hd ready hitachi? also to improve the sd quality from my 6023?

A miracle.
Really - all you can do is calibrate the TV with Avia or Video Essentials or have an ISF technician do his thing on your TV.
Your "problem" comes from the fact that DBS is optimized for a 27-36 inch Analog TV from a reasonable distance. Your HD Ready set just shows off the imperfections that much better.

Well adjusting sharpness down and turn off any "special" processing that may be done by your set. The edge enhancements and stuff like that are not needed for DBS, it just enhances the artifacts. Also be sure to use the S-Video connections.
Using S-video, marginally better picture thru my panasonic dvdr, thru its component inputs. I do recieve on digital "local", the home station is hdtv, but this is a translator, not in hd, and no better than my local sub thru dish. thanks for the help anyway
