Canada's Star Choice satellite TV service added more than
17,000 subscribers during its fiscal second quarter that ended
Feb. 28. The net additions took the company's total subscriber
base to 796,257.

Shaw Communications, the Canadian cable operator that controls
Star Choice, said the unit's revenue increased by 16.5 percent
over the same quarter last year. The jump in revenue - along
with cost reductions - enabled Star Choice to generate
operating income of $10 million during the quarter, compared
to an operating loss of $6.7 million last year, Shaw said.

Star Choice's main competitor in the Canadian satellite TV
business, Bell ExpressVu, has more than 1.3 million
subscribers

Those numbers are so low, that it jolts my memory back to the realization that the population of a country that looks that big on a map, really has a small population. Most of the great white north is uninhabited.

Canada's only reason for existence is to
prevent the North Pole from sliding down
into Minnesnowta. Why anyone would
choose to live in such a meteorlogically
inhospitable clime is one of the world's
great mysteries.

Except that they showed an operating profit - as opposed to DirecTV and Expressvu ongoing losses.

Guess that happens when one uses an encryption system (DCII) where everyone pays their way.

Actually, Canada by its huge geographical size has more available square miles per person than any other country in the world. We do have cold winters but we also have very hot summers as well in the southern parts. Very good quality of life here if you can live with the high taxes and cold weather. The province of Ontario is so big that I could drive from Toronto to Florida faster than driving from one end of Ontario to the other.

When is Star Choice getting that Motorola dual HGD tuner/PVR?

Saw it on the Motorola website, but now it's gone.

Maybe the other companies should look at how they operate their business to see how they can make a profit. Perhaps they are making a profit bc they are not concentrating on adding a huge number of customers at once but focusing more on customer retention. Not sure on that though. Also the fewer customers the better service I would think and the more attention and more important each customer is. Just remember how Dish was when they first begun compared to now. Each customer is more important when it comes to Star Choice than the other bigger companies.

Wow, dual tuner and HD compatable. I never thought I would see the day where SC beats Bell on something. Considering the 921 won't be out until fall at the earliest and it will take a few months for Bell to get their 921 (9210???) set up with software and everything.
