I have a DVR, I believe the newer one, not HD and noticed by my card is a USB plus. What is the purpose of this?

Can I move stuff onto my PC?

The USB port can't be used to offload content to a PC. It also can't be used for external hard drives (eSata only). Other than powering cooling fans, the only use I know of is connecting the AM21 OTA tuner to an HR21/HR22.

It can be also used for the ever popular "future use."

Is it powered? If so, then it makes a great spot to charge the I-Phone.

How about a USB powered fan.

I figured it was there for any new firmware/software releases that may come up if for some reason you lost sat and internet service.

It also charges a Harmony remote quite nicely too.

Yup a number of people use it for that.

Older receivers used to have serial ports on the back to hook into wired remote control systems. Newer receivers with USB ports can do this with USB-to-serial adapters.

DirecTV Plus DVRs have a front panel USB jack (lower left corner, behind a door). I believe it was there to facilitate moving recordings over to a portable media device (like a video iPod) for viewing on the go. AFAIK, that feature has never been implemented.

Edit: Found this in a DirecTV press release (http://phoenix.corporate-ir.net/phoenix.zhtml?c=127160&p=irol-newsArticle&ID=799955&highlight=) from the 2005 CES:

DIRECTV Products and Services

DIRECTV 2GO

The DIRECTV 2Go service will allow DIRECTV customers to transfer programming content from their DIRECTV Plus DVR to a wide variety of portable media players. Supporting DIRECTV specific audio and video formats, the service will enable customers to connect a DIRECTV compatible portable media player directly to DIRECTV receivers. DIRECTV 2Go devices will also display DIRECTV content in a separate menu area with a DIRECTV-branded user interface. These new media players further demonstrate DIRECTV's commitment to providing consumers with the content they want, how they want it, and where they want it. DIRECTV plans to launch the DIRECTV 2Go service in 2006.

I believe future use can only be plugged into the rear USB. For features available soon you can use the both the front and rear USB. As far as not in production features there has been no word on which one will be used. More information will be available in time for the next prediction thread.

for engineer purposes generally for the port on the front. the back is used for the am21 on Hr21-H21 units. works great for a charge port though

I charge my 360 controllers using the front USB port on my HR21.

I charge my 360 controllers using the front USB port on my HR21.

And I use the rear usb port to charge my PS3 controller. Works out great considering that the PS3 has to be on to charge the controller. The HR* is already "on" all the time.

Yeeaaa... With it being a standard USB port, with 5v always active, its great to charge devices like Xbox360 Controllers, PS3 Controllers, iPhones, iTouchs, iPods, Zune's, Digital Camera's, Bluetooth Headsets, Bluetooth/RF Mice (if applicable)...
You can plug a hub into it too.
