NEW YORK - Deep inside the bowels of the Continental Arena in New Jersey's Meadowlands sports complex, a large tractor trailer is parked and packed with about a dozen people, all sitting in the dark, watching a screen full of monitors. The game being played out on the arena floor, a Monday night match between the National Basketball Association's Eastern Conference defending champions, the New Jersey Nets, and the Houston Rockets, is little more than a routine regular-season contest. But for the people inside the truck, and for the very future of the sports business, it's an important occasion.

The event marked only the third time that the NBA's league-owned television network, NBA TV, has telecast a game in high-definition television, the crystal-clear TV format that for years has been on the verge of totally altering the television experience. But even after years of regulatory hurdles were cleared and technical problems were repaired, HDTV television sets remained way too expensive, and there were too few shows telecast via high-definition digital signals.
