From the article:
For a DirecTV satellite package of 125 channels, including local channels and seven HBO channels, customers would pay $37.43 in taxes per year on top of their $52 per month fee.

This applies to Dish, too. Luckily I don't live in Ohio anymore. California tried to pull this last year but we were spared this extra tax on satellite TV. It isn't clear to me from the article whether this has already been signed into law yet.

Is this just sales tax or in addition to the sales tax?

This is an additional sales tax.

Not much different than raising the gas tax 6 cents a gallon.

So it has to pass the Ohio senate, right? In that case, I would be harassing and threatening my state senator if I lived in Ohio. That bill would be an outrage. Make them pay the price for taking that dirty cable blood money.

DirectTV and Dish have put together a web site about the satellite tax issue. http://www.stopsatellitetax.com/stoptax/

Sounds like the stupid law makers in ohio want to have the dish subscribers on par with the Cable nuts whom pay Franschice fees... I went with E* to have cheaper service... and to get away from that monster called Cable!

Its a wonder my state has not considered it yet the way they tax us here on property and so forth.

mattb: a state sales tax HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH A FRANCHISE FEE. I hope you were being sarcastic. Franchise fees give NOTHING TO THE STATE. The only justification for a DBS **STATE** sales tax would be a cable **STATE** sates tax. Mattb, I would be harassing and terrorizing my state senator, if I were you. Don't let them get away with this without being exposed as a total sellout fraud.
