Ailing ABC Family Bulks Up with Comedies, Films

Wilting rapidly in the ratings, ABC Family Channel hopes to blossom with fresh programming beginning in the spring.

In a news conference Monday, the cable network's management team outlined its plan to lure more teens and young adults with lighthearted comedies in late afternoon and primetime. ABC Family's programming budget this year will exceed the previous two years' allotment, estimated at a combined $280 million by Kagan World Media.

Since being acquired by the Walt Disney Co. from News Corp. in 2001, ABC Family (formerly Fox Family Channel) has yet to find its groove, suffering double-digit drops in its first-quarter delivery of key demos including 18-34 (down 39%), 18-49 (off 38%) and 25-54 (down 39%).
