Hello all, longtime lurker here. I'll be returning to Directv after a 2.5 year absence and am very interested in the HR22:
1) Generally speaking, is there any perceived picture degredation on recordings vs. live? I would imagine not, but just checking.
2) Have firmware updates ever been known to degrade picture quality? Is the picture quality the same as standalone non-DVR Directv HD receivers?
3) Very basic and subjective: are you glad you have yours?
Thanks.

Actually, I love my HR22, it was the last update that screwed everything up. Before that update, my HR22 was golden. No PQ deg. with recordings, but the latest fw has damaged my PQ, no doubt about it. I love the extra recording space also. Just hope they get this update fixed, and pronto.

How long would it typically take to get the update fixed? Is there some standard regarding how often updates are released, or could it be anytime?

My experience with the HR22 has been just the opposite. My HR22 arrived three weeks ago and crashed 3 times in the first week! After the latest update was downloaded, everything has been fine. I too love the HR22 and it is very user friendly.

1) No, there should not be. The stream is the same in either case as everything is saved to the HDD and played back, recordings are just kept where live is deleted (over simplification, but this is how it works in concept). This is the advantage IMO of digital DVRs unlike standalone DVRs that record from analog sources and have some PQ degradation.
2) PQ should not be effected, it is just a digital stream being played back on the hardware presented. Hardware difference I could see making a difference, but software most likely not unless they further optimize decoding or something.
3) Dont have an HR22, but I am glad to have my HR21 :D
3. I have an HR20-700, an HR21-200, and an R22-200 and all are great machines. Very happy with the product.

Just like in the past, they will not be able to guarantee models.

For your sake, I hope you wait and get a 23-700. I would not buy a 22-100 if they were selling for $5. Or any other 100.

I just had my HR21-700 break on me. I got the replacement today an HR22-100. It seems like the pq is terrible compared to the HR21. I don't know if it is just me or it really is. Anyone else seen this?

Make sure the Display and HDTV settings are the same as your old box. My HR22-100 has a great PQ into a Sharp Aquos using HDMI, however, its slow as hell compared with my HR20-700.

It took a restart, but now it looks great. The guide and menus seem to be slower than the HR21s though.

I got an HD DVR this week. I cant believe it took so long to order one but it did come in handy that somebody gave me 200 bucks in Best Buy gift cards. My single question is..
How do you change to the other tuner instead of changing channels? If Im watching one show, but not necessarily recording it, and I want to go to the other tuner where I might have another show with buffer, how do I switch. Im used to my old tivo where you can do that whether recording or not. It was the down button.

I dunno I have and HR22-100 and 2 R22-100s and an R15-100, I got the second R22-100 when my R15-300 died.... So there :p

You can't. Tivo had two live buffers that you could switch between. The DirecTV branded DVRs have two tuners but only one live buffer. You can emulate the functionality by recording one channel and using previous to toggle back and forth.
The PQ should be identical between the models, besides some saying a bit of difference with the HR23 possibly.
My HR22 and HR21 are identical in PQ.
No dual live buffer .. yet.
You mean still....Its been a few years since the HR20

I love my HR22-100. Runs cool, fast, and quiet. It is just as fast as my HR21-700 most of the time and actually runs cooler and quieter....
