a few months back I screwed up and removed the ViiV software on my HP Vista desktop via the control panel, add/remove programs. I called HP and they said the only way to get it back was to format my drive and re-install the start-up disk and all the software. Does anybody know if this is true or can I download the software and re-install?

I don't know if that's true, but I can tell you that there are alternatives to Viiv if you're trying to share to DIRECTV receivers. TVersity is an excellent one.

HP told you the truth, access to the ViiV software was always restricted to the OEM's unfortunately. I built a ViiV capable PC back when ViiV was still and active program and I couldn't get it anywhere.. Drag out those disks...

Which version of Vista are you running? According to the site...
You must have either Windows Vista Home Premium or Windows Vista Ultimate in order to use the Intel® Viiv™ software.
Also, there are two links on the site...one for XP and one for Vista. Did you initiate the download from the lower link?
About the Black Lab...he is GREAT! Terrific demeanor around the house (inside dog) and fun to play with at the park.
ultimate, and yes... the bottom vista link

Which version are you trying because the version from directv would not work for me either . I had to get it from the Gateway site .

Dell has 1.6. I don't know if it is specific to Dell machines, but it is for 32bit Vista.
