D&M Holdings (Denon and Marantz) bought up most of SonicBlue's property at auction yesterday. They paid $18million for ReplayTV.

No word if Echostar even tried bidding.

Some have got to wonder what Echostar is thinking these days.

Echostar thinks its the #2 PVR company out there and doesn't need replay.

Heck for that price TiVo should have paid for it.

It must be because they believe in the product they are selling. :eek2:

Haven't you heard? He really wanted to get it but was afraid he would have to raise our rates because of that and ended up not doing it :D

The Replay auction didn't attract more buyers because of the need to support existing ReplayTV owners for an indefinite period of time. The new owner doesn't see a dime of the money originally paid for all those ReplayTV boxes, nor does it get any money from those that prepaid for a lifetime subscription. Yet it has to continue to provide them with service...

Another issue here is the fact that content owners detest ReplayTV for its design of a product, not just for the automatic skipping of commercials (without need to press a skip button), but because the unencrypted transmission enabled "hackers" to create an application to share the content on the box with PCs. Any product that allows simple, seamless sharing of television recordings with a PC is a non-starter, as far as content providres are concerned.

Good point, thats not good that you have to provide service for nothing to existing subs, although that does not cost the company any money it is just not additional money to be received.

Not a surprised Dish did not get this successful bid.
