Doesn't everyone see that Charlie made the right decision to pass on the ReplayTV acquisition?

CHEAP*** Charlie just wants to keep our costs down! If he would have ponied up $18 million, the costs would have been made up in monthly ReplayTV charges for 721 users. Assuming there are 1,000 721 users at the moment, that would average out to about $1,500.00 a month in fees for each user just to use the ReplayTV features. Charlie would need to get every cent back so he could breakeven within a year. This is the only way the buyout would have made sense to him.

The only other alternative would be to raise every customer's monthly bill $1, but we know Charlie would NEVER do that! LOL

If there were only 1,000 721 users, there would be no point to having the 721.

There may not be 100,000 users yet, but there are probably several tens of thousands of 721 users out there so far. I don't know, perhaps they have broken 100,000...

In any case, the same technology would be useful for the 501/508 boxes...

Perhaps he's already worked a deal with D&M Holdings to license the ReplayTV patent rights. That would be OK too.

goblin,

I wouldn't hold my breath if I were you! Anything that will cost Charlie some money you can just forget about. He has proven that he isn't concerned about losing customers to DirecTV and will not invest in things that will help the company in the long run. He only looks at the short term goals and not the long term ones.

I seriously doubt there are 100,000 nor would there ever be 100,000 721's on the market or to be sold because that would be 1 in 90 customers in which I doubt because of those most would choose the 508 instead if they would get a PVR.

Jason, since he's gaining customers faster than DirecTV, apparently he doesn't have too much to be concerned about.

The best deal would be as Goblin suggests = E* to licence the software. E* would not have a liablity to supply guide info to Replay customers or worry about content providers suing over some of the features such as sending a recording over the internet.

E* should be able to get the licence cheap as the new owners probably could use a quick cash deal. Sounds like a win win deal for both companies.

I asked before does anyone know where to view a replay guide on the net? I tried Replay's site but I could not find any screen shots.

Thanks, Murray
