Are we going to get any new national hd channels by year end?
I understand that Directv is trying to get as much local as possible.
Just looking for ANY information. Does anybody know?
SatRacer - Do you have any idea?
Also, what channels do you guys think we can expect if any this year?
Just waiting patiently, but I want to know NOW :)
Many threads already on this topic.

Thought you might like some fries with that order.
Actually, I expect that we'll get some (maybe even many) of those channels, eventually .... most likely in early 2009 just before the annual price increase. ;)

JeffAgreed. I don't see anything of significance for some time yet. Maybe the "watch paint drying" HD channel that pays D* to have their channel included in the line-up. Like you implied, I also think D* has no intentions of any major additions until they can boost the the price a bit.
Wake me up when TMC is in HD :)

I expect nothing, and will take anything!!!
Actually, not true.. I expect only two, sort of... I think we will have both Golf and Versus when they split.. Other than that, It appears from reliable sources that they plan on adding a few more.. but nothing is set in stone...

[QUOTE=...and Ow my balls...[/QUOTE]
Funny "Ow! My balls!" has not been made into a real series/TV network yet. With all this reality TV it should be a hit. America's Funniest videos must have the rights to the concept or something. Jackass has advanced the movement. Good physical comedy. Viewers submit their own videos. Same concept as americas funniest videos, but only focused on the one situation. No babys or pets. This must already exist on the internet. Think they could have enough submitted content for a 24 hour feed. All digitally submitted content. Everything submitted goes though a moderator and has to pass quality and FCC standards to be aired. The moderator could put content into different time slots so the more crude stuff could be on at nite and more tame during the day. It could be an interactive channel and users could vote for their favorites and in prime time they could play the top 20. It would be a movement, very big with teens. Make a killing on ad revenue. Would probaby have to expand to sub channels. It is such a brilliant marketable idea!!! The moderators would be on air talent veejays (from comic last standing auditions) pd $5/hr. It would be like the old MTV video format (the one that failed). But only showing 30 sec clips for short attention spans. These are independant films with no studios or record companies to pay. Viral clips on the internet are all the marketing you need. The demographic is perfect. Get the kids hooked on the G rated content and as they get older they move on to the MA content. When they get tired of it new kids join on. Also these are silent movies so we could go world-wide. Just the veejays would need foreign subtitles or overdub. If we could just get the China market....

Any network with TURNER in its name makes me think of old movies in stretch-o-vision. If that's what they are going to do, forget it. If they're actually going to show old movies in true HD 16:9, go for it!
i think we r only gonna get between 3 n 5 b4 the end of the year, but i hope at least 2 of those to be real HD channels not like mtvhd or fuelhd

The Christmas shopping season is close to begining.
Because of that, I am thinking that more national HD's will be showing up soon to get those purchasing new HDTV's a reason to also get Directv.

I'm beginning to think that there's nothing D* could reasonably do to satisfy the majority of us.

Since they letterbox widescreen movies on the present SD channel, it seems likely movies would generally be in the OAR if they had an HD channel.
Unfortunately, I have not seen anything about them creating an HD version.

Most older films, and I'm talking classic movies here would never be shown in 16x9 anyway... to do so would create the very "stretchovision you hate.
Take a film like Casablanca... film format is 1.37:1, what I would expect them to do with a film like this is present it in the exact format that it was shown originally (essentially 4x3) but in all it's exquisite detail. High Definition doesn't necessarily have to be a widescreen format, at least for me, what I want to see where films are concerned is that it be presented as it was originally in the theater with the digital perfection that only HD can deliver. I have no doubt that the black and white film frames of yeaterday can be digitized to HD levels and the audio can be reworked and digitized as well.
At least I hope that others would not want to see these classic films distorted or manipulated to fill a 16x9 screen.

....but then of course, there were also a number of them filmed in PanaVision....the widest format used to date....2:35:1.....
PBS locals would be nice.Which, of course, is entirely off topic in this thread.

I thought Comedy Central was available in HD on at least one cable network -- but noooo. I'd sure like to see Jon and his guests in non-fuzzy vision!
Edit: Not available yet. I thought I remembered such a report in connection with Cox or TWC, but the best hints I can find now are:
Comedy Central-HD -- (Channel Launch Rumored)

Channels Not Yet Launched...
Comedy Central HD (Qtr 1 09) -- see Comedy Central Official Site

... but I couldn't find any such info at http://www.comedycentral.com

That brings up an interesting question. How does everyone feel about those films in the 2:35-2:55:1 ratio on their HD screens?
If you run them in their native format you will end up with a slight letterboxing effect on the screen vs modifying them to fill the screen. I have seen them displayed both ways, my personal preference as always is to see it in the original format whenever possible and let the screen display as it may. I don't feel the need to fill every square inch of the screen for the sake of filling it, I want to see the movie the way the director saw it and subsequently seen in the theater.

Evidence?
Cox announced is coming in some Midwest markets Oct 15, but it never showed. Still apparently doesn't exist.
WRT Comedy Central being available in HD: Evidence?Sorry, could not re-find the cable reference I saw a month ago. :(
