Syria introduced a resolution Wednesday in the U.N. Security Council that would declare the Middle East a region free of weapons of mass destruction.
"The Syrian government is ready to sign a treaty under the U.N.'s supervision to make the whole Middle East a zone free from all mass destruction weapons -- nuclear, chemical and biological," he said in an interview with Australia's government-owned Special Broadcasting Service.
What we need is a resolution making the planet Earth a WMD free zone.

This is not going to happen. Israel has already defied tons and tons of UN resolutions. They'll just laugh at this one.

You're right, Israel would laugh at pretty much anything Syria says that's for 'the common good'.
The Iraq war spooked them. Now they want to be the first on the block to show the US that they're just really nice people.

It will NEVER work.
Even if the UN tries to put out some kind of resolution to make the whole middle east free of WMDs, Israel will probably order the US to veto that resolution.
I suggest a muslim free middle east.

Non-sequitur! Nomad... A-N-A-L-Y-Z-E!!! :hair:
Well, I don't know how about this scenario: Some sort of theatrewide weapons treaty is signed. Countries agree to disclose their weapons stashes and allow monitors to verify compliance. Then, there are annual goals for reducing such weapons. Something similar to the Strategic Arms Limitation Talks.
The framework allows Israel and all the countries in the region to slowly ramp down. If I were in Israel I would feel safer knowing that my neighbors were cooperating. Of course, the big elephant in the room is that we need peace with the Palestinians first.
But come on people, don't be so quick to count this out. Two years ago who would have thought that the US would invade Iraq? Who's to say that it's impossible that in 2 years we could have a cessation of violence with the Palestinians and Israelis, and be on track to reduce the level of these terrible weapons in the region?
syria is suggesting this because they probably see what they think is the handwriting on the wall....but anything that jumpstarts a legitimate dialogue that will FINALLY bring some degree of peace to the middle east, creates a palestinian state, and take some of the pressure off israel, and maybe even refocuses these idiot terrorist groups from sending young people and pregnant women into suicide bombing missions works for me...

Right now I would settle for a STATE that was a WMD-free zone.
One of the largest stockpiles of nerve gas and mustard gas is right here in Oregon. And just across the border, in Washington, one can find weapons-grade plutonium, plus a lot of buried nuclear materials. All of these within the Columbia River Basin.
