I am interested in getting a DVR. I just signed up for D*TV around 6 months ago... and IIRC, if I were to activate a DVR and cancel my current HD box, I'd be renewing my contract again...
Is there any way to not have to be tied in for another "contract length", just continue the one I have, while still obtaining a new box / credit for trading in an old box for a new box?

You can purchase an HR21 PRO for $600. Since it's owned, I don't believe you have to extend your contract.

Yes you can purchase a DVR as owned to avoid a new agreement.
They will not give you credit for your old box as it is leased and needs to be returned to them if you are no longer using it.

You can buy any receiver it does not have to be the hr21 pro. You can only buy a receiver through a D* csr.

I purchased this one [H21-100] from Best Buy. Anything that can be done, as far as that goes? And how would you go about purchasing one as "owned", and cost?
(Thanks!)

Then you leased it. You would need to call D* and say you want to buy a DVR upgrade not lease one.

Any idea what that price generally runs? I know since we already have DVR service on another TV, there is no DVR charge, but what about the unit itself.

I want to say it's around $250 but you would have to call in to get an exact price. There will also be a $19.95 D&H and $50 activation fee for an owned unit.
What's the reason you're not wanting an agreement? If you want the ability to just leave whenever their agreement is prorated so if you stay long enough it becomes a wash.

Mainly because the Unit downstairs started the 2year ~6 months ago. Do they do decent proratings?
(the account is my dads, and I'd hate for him to want to cancel at the end of the initial contract, and me still have mine stuck on the contract).

The ECF is $20 per month. An advanced receiver is 24 month commitment. So if you canceled with 6 months remaining the difference would be $120. So overall it would save you money to still lease it and pay your dad the ECF difference.

We don't know because no one here buys them. I think it was about $500 but I'm not sure.
