I finally figured out what's going on at D*...
It just came to me as I was reading the comic page in the morning paper: the cartoon strip "Dilbert" takes place at D* headquarters.

Very near you. Scott Adams worked at PacBell in San Ramon. I knew a number of people who worked there, back when.

Dilbert is any company where you work in a cube. It is my everyday life and I don't work for D*. ;)

Yes, we don't work in cubes at my company (we all have private offices), but it's 100% Dilbert. We hired a new CFO that originally came in as a financial analyst and his nickname is Dogbert. Actually, we all have nicknames. Mine is Dr. No, mainly because when someone asks if we can do something, my first answer is always no. But of course it does usually end up getting done - under promise and over deliver - that's my motto!
Now to bring that back to topic, the real problems at D* likely stem from typical corporate bureaucracy issues. Although management decisions should be based on what is best for the shareholders, which is building long-term value, they are often based strategic objectives to boost to short-term departmental profits. Throw in large bonuses for meeting these goals and you get ego-based decisions. I'll bet the executive that initiated the 1080p/24 strategy got a huge bonus, but the poor guy working to fix the "771 continues after rain fade" issues is likely not even getting a simple pat on the back.

Yeah, that's my point... we see lots of "bling" but still have lots of simple recording, audio/video issues that are long standing.
The D* guys don't care about those who's money they already have... only about getting unsuspecting folks to sign up.
I'm a cube puppy too! :(
Where is that floor-to-ceiling office at, please!

I worked in a cube in the past, but not now.....
...I also hold the patent on bunk-cubes.... :D

That sentiment seems to be driving the DirecTV corporate PR machine of late. Ad campaigns and press releases are pretty much propganda now, and should be taken by prospective customers with a very large grain of salt. :nono2:

Hmmmmmmmmmm!
Me too!
My best quote during a faculty meeting was ..."What do children in this school have to do with this?.......
Then I entered the world of DTV and got..."well Mr smart guy.......customers do not pay your salary!" .....he meant wages......
You can either hide from idiots or join them.

After working for Southwestern Bell, the U.S. Navy, the U.S. Department of State, and the U.S. Air Force, I can say Dilbert is unfortunately alive and well (but barely functional) in all of them.
I sit in my cube with my headphones on and try to let my competence hold back the tide for as long as possible, then move on when the flood of stupidity breaches the levee. I'm a refugee from Hurricane Stupid. :)

Oh please tell me this is original and not lifted from somewhere lots of folks have already read it. One fo the funniest things I've read in a long time and I've going to steal it as a my new Life Motto.

I don't think I've ever read Dilbert, although I have seen examples in meetings and such (in peoples power point presentations).

Oh, I'm nothing if not original. Glad you liked it. It's funnier to read than it has been to experience.

Laughing so hard I forgot how to type apparently. Unfortunately, I've lived much the same life though never had it summed up quite so nicely.

I work for your friendly county gov't, and I would say Calvin & Hobbes fits my reality a little more. Ever see the black and white explanation?
