View Full Version : Ordering spare lnb, should I switch to a swm?

I have a Slimline with 2 cables going to my HR21,and a third going to an old Hughes for a bedroom tv.......pretty simple. I've having some issues with 101 odd transponders, and it's either the software upgrade or possibly the lnb going bad. Regardless, I'm going to order a spare to have on hand. Looking on Ebay, I noticed a lot of swm lnb's for the Slimline, so I'm wondering if there is any advantage to switching to that setup with such a simple setup? I don't expect my setup to get much more complex either. It doesn't seem sensible to me, but figured it wouldn't hurt to ask, in case I'm missing something. Thanks!

With the SWM LNB you will not be able to use your old Hughes box. The SWM LNB only works with a H, HR, R16, or R22 Box. If you want to use your current setup as is i would recommend just getting another 5LNB. Check out SolidSignal.com.
IF you do decide to get an SWM LNB you will also need to get a PI to power the SWM LNB and approved splitters to run more then one box and of course replace/ stop using the Hughes.

Or a D12.

unless you use swm8 legacy ports correct?
unless you need swm I'd go with normal lnb and use switches if you need to expand.

He's talking about repalcing the LNB, so no legacy ports. If he installs a SMW8, then he would get the legacy ports and the ability for future expansion, but that won't do anything about a failing LNB.

yes, what I meant was without an swm8 he would lose legacy receivers he has so a swm lnb is out.

Thanks for the feedback! Sounds like I'm fine leaving well enough alone. I do have a spare H20 in the garage that I could use for the bedroom kitched setup, but it's not worth switching it over when everything works fine, and I don't plan on expanding my setup anytime soon. Just wanted to check before I picked up a spare lnb.
