Yes Dish is offering it to some people currently (according to Dish's software upgrade page as well)...
People report some Interactive enhancement capabilities, and transparant color on guide (or menu or something like that)...
Sounds to me - the same as that 3900's new software upgrade, that was given to selected few of us, and later on pulled...
I wonder if Dish will pull this 4900's new upgrade away from the ones that they gave it to, or if they ll make it permanent...this time...
Lately - those software upgrades (and expecially pulling them after) - reminds me of "Experimental Rabbits" - hehe
Are we "them" now or what? :)

I'll look and see if my 4900 gets upgraded.

Perhaps some of the customers are beta testers and dont even know it.

I looked, I don't have it. I'm still on 1.76.

i don't think you ll be getting it..
my guess - they will pull it again (after testing it i guess) - as they did with 3900's latest...
(same story - transparent bar, Interactive enhancemnt, etc) - so if follow the consistancy theory - hehe - they ll pull it!

I've got a 4900 and haven't seen any changes yet. I'm looking for a better weather application most. I want a detailed 36 hour forecast.

Why did they pull it if there were no problems with it? I would think that version would be better than our current version we have now.

Beta test ? Right.
ALL consumers are beta test. (If you want to call it that)
Went to NAB a few weeks ago.... half the equipment there was
vapor-ware. What makes you think consumer equipment, that you pay little to nothing for is in working condition?
Please don't reply with "the salesman said"....
No doubt, bad position for well deserving "investors" in first generation consumer technology.

well - according to Dish's software page.. - the "4900's deal finalized" i guess :) - so everyone should be getting it now!
I ve been offered and took it - new bar, Interactive enhancements, etc..
Oh, Ya - and "green chit" on Sys Info screen - hehe - looks good! (little taste for ya'll) :)
p178
P.S. - oh ya...according to Dish's software page - 1000s and 3900s are getting new one too now (3900 again, after they pulled it - hehe), but the way it is shown there - "the deal is not finalized" yet - they are still testing it i guess - so only few people are getting it or something", so good chance YOU are not offered it yet on those, nor my 3900 (by the way)
so no "green chit" on my 3900 yet on Sys Info screen (accordingly) :)

i noticed good in this upgrade - Interactive enhancement ON/OFF (on menu) - for some that like it or do not like it!
[edit] - what are the examples of channels that have this enhancement enabling? or Dish doesn't have enhancement yet, but just getting ready for it?

I got this upgrade (software version 178) on my 4900; it changes the solid blue areas in the channel bar & browse bar, so that the whole bar has a transparent gray background in each case.
And, the "TV Enhancements" is on by default (or at least it was for me) but it doesn't appear to do anything, as far as I can tell. I tried CNN (one of the channels that I know has Wink on DirecTV) and nothing popped up.
And, it says in green, on the System Information screen, "DISH 500 Card Ready". That makes me think a new access card is eventually coming. I'd wager that it will have a picture of a DISH 500 on it. :)
I hope we get Wink first, or at least at the same time any other receivers do, on the 4900. Since it was sold with Interactive TV listed as a big feature, Dish has previously rolled out OpenTV first to the 4900.

Damn Darkman, Nice Avatar. They look like they're friends :D
I have received the 1.78 download (funny that the 4900 was left on for the last 48 hrs). The browse banner looks more like my 6000 now. It is transperant where it had been blue. Aside from what has already been mentioned I have nothing new to add.
Dish 500 Card ready. WTF is that? I guess we will be getting that new card in the mail. I wonder if we'll need it to decode 121 stuff?

Can't it just mean that the Card is Dish 500 setup ready or IRD is ready for Dish 500 (and it just telling the card about that, showing it's info, etc), etc... - Kinda "cosmetic" thing?
Anyone knows more on that?
Scott? - lol - What about your "disnetwork"'s Newsletter (or connection) - What can they say on that Green "Dish 500 Card ready" on Sys Info screen?
hehe    ---> Green, green - i am GREEN!!!!!

Wonder if "Green" somehow related to the "Green Card" - j/k :)
Got 178 yesterday sometime. I am glad that they got rid of the blue on the banners and went to transparent. Looks alot better IMHO. One thing that I wish that they would incorporate on their banners is the Start time and Stop times...
Time left is o.k. but I sure wish they would add the start/stop times.....so you don't have to go to the information screen to find that time out.

just want to point out - if you press Browse button - another Transparent bar will "arrive" this time at the bottom of screen, and in it - it shows what time the Program started, and Time left (as at Top bar)...
If you press Browse one more time - it will show the Start of another Show (being the End time of the current one) :)
All i ment by this all - pressing Browse button (in the above case), - is also transparent, and takes way less Screen, then if pressing the Info button...
Yeah, I know that you can go to the browse button, it looks alot easier if the first banner at the top would incllude the stop time...... rather than even having to pull up the bottom banner to see the time. FWIW, I would much rather have the stop time than the time left displayed if it were one or the other.
Then when you pulled up the bottom banner it would also display start/stop/ times of the next scheduled event....
