View Full Version : What to do if programming is delayed?

What does everyone do about recording a program that has been delayed from something prior that ran long, such as a sporting event?

I regularly watch 60 Minutes, Cold Case, and The Unit on CBS Sunday evenings, which start at 6, 8, and 9 p.m. Central, respectively. On most weekends these programs are delayed anywhere from 15 to 30 minutes because of a football game earlier in the day.

So say I want to record the entire series of the Unit. Last night the show did not start until around 9:28 and ended around 10:30. What would I do in such cases, especially if I were not at home to adjust the times to compensate? Anything? Would I just have to set it to record from 9:00 to 10:30 and hope that it never gets delayed longer than that?

When setting up the Series Link add end padding long enough to cover any overrun by the sporting event.

I always pad those shows by 1 hour, just to be safe. Never had a problem doing that.

Because CBS does this(delayed Most weeks), in addition to recording them on my hr10. I also auto bit torrent the Unit. I find that I don't even look at the recordings on the HR10 and just watch the Media center torrents.

I pad the sporting event but if there's something later (like 'The Unit') I record the next couple of things for at least an hour more, sometimes 1:30.

Now see, I have been complaining for years about unnecessary programming delays caused by the inability of sports franchises to take the field and get their work done in a timely manner and to stop inconveniencing those of those of us who wish to watch television as scheduled. :p

Well, they could do what Fox does... they schedule a wrap up for after the later game ends. The length of the wrap up show is determined by how long the game ran over... so it could be an hour... it could be 30 minutes or they could go right to regularly scheduled programming.

But, Larry... if it's a big issue for ya... just move to the West Coast... the late game ends at 4 PM, so regular TV is never delayed for football on CBS. :hurah: :hurah: :p :p :p

As a fan of the "Amazing Race" I do the same... works perfectly.

In the rare case of the game running more than an hour late (I don't remember this happening in a very long time) they would end up pre-empting one of the shows. In fact it's been so long, I think it was back when they just had 60 Minutes, Cold Case, and a made-for-TV movie. So they would cancel Cold Case and just show the movie after 60 Minutes.

In any case, my point is that a one-hour pad would be sufficient. One great thing about the HR2x's is that you can record two shows at once on the same channel on the same tuner. In other words, the extra hour you add at the end of Cold Case (from 10:00 - 11:00) does not conflict with the first hour of The Unit. So if you have something recording on another channel it won't create a conflict.

It works better than only padding the last show, since you would miss the end of Cold Case if it were new and The Unit were a repeat. And I prefer it to setting up a manually recurring 4- or 5-hour block, since it allows us to delete each show when we're finished with it, which is good for us since we're usually a few weeks behind on most of our shows.

I usually keep the one-hour pad on there all the time, since there are often overruns from golf and college basketball in the winter and spring. I just check the schedule occasionally and delete the pads when there's no late game on CBS, or I adjust my pads if I'm watching when the late games end and I see when 60 Minutes or TAR starts.

That method could fail if the following show is a repeat and you set it up for first run only, or if there's a schedule change and the following show isn't on immediately after the one you want.
