I have two HR20-700 hooked up to one TV. Both HDMI. Both have been working fine. All of a sudden one of them has no picture. Just a gray screen. There is sound. I can change the channels. I can get to the list and play recorded programs but no picture. Just sound. D* suggest doing a complete system reset. Of course my wife will loose all her programs and isn't happy about that. I have done the red button restart several times. I tried unplugging it several times. Once, when I remove the card and replaced it the picture came back but when I shut the TV off and returned later no picture again and the card removing has not worked since.
Any ideas for me to try before do the reset? I'm going to try a different connection tomorrow and try switching HDMI cables but would like some input if there is something else I can try.

Try using component wires. If that works, you might have an HDMI cable that has gone bad. D*'s "fix of the month" is the complete system reset. Usually does nothing but wipe out your recordings. Try the component wires first.

You're on the right track.
Start by connecting via component or even S-Video.
Also try hitting the RES button on the front panel when connected via HDMI to see if forcing a resolution change could help.
Try swapping HDMI cables, that's also a possibility.

I just looked at your setup and I see you have a Sony TV. Sony TVs and HRs have compatibility problems with HDMI. Not all Sonys, but some do and this might be the case here altho it seems strange that the 700s worked well for a while, but with these things, you never know. Try the component wires, if you don't have a set, try composite wires. If you get a picture with the composite or component wires, you know you have an HDMI issue. Might be the HDMI cable, might be the TV itself.

I had a very similar issue yesterday, out of the blue. I have an HR20 connected via HDMI to a Vizio TV. It's been connected for months. All of a sudden, yesterday, my husband turns it on and it's a grey screen. He did a reboot and still it didn't seem like it was working, even though we could turn it on and off, we know this because we could see the lights on the front.
Every once in a while, a picture would pop up on the screen for less than a second. We also rebooted several times. Then we realized that we were getting sound as well, same as you, Jerry. We checked all connections, tried hooking it up a different way. Then on one reboot, we got a picture up. But it said please insert a valid access card. I had no clue why we were getting that message but I pulled out the access card and reinserted and then it worked.
Only weird thing is all my HD channels in the guide are now that dark blue, which is usually reserved for channels you are not subscribed to. But they work when I watch them.
Just thought I'd share in case this is some weird thing that is going to start happening.
Good luck with your DVR, Jerry.

Same problem with mine. Have reset numerous times. Finally on this morning's effort I got the message that tuner 2 was not peforming. Service call tomorrow.
Anyone with this problem needs to call Tech Support to let them know about it! This is apparently a problem with the receiver model, and they need to be made aware of it.

A new NR didn't just come down for this model in particular.....I find it weird that all of a sudden a certain model specific bug is present....I will check my 2 HR20s that are HDMI connected when I get home...

A kind of similar problem here. Last night I started to watch a movie I had recorded earlier in the day. About 2 minutes into the movie the screen went black but the audio was ok. In thirty seconds or so the picture came back, and was fine for about another minute or two, and went black again for about thirty seconds. This on again, off again situation repeated until I stopped and deleted the recording. I then watched two other movies recorded about a week earlier, and there were no problems with either of them.
This occured after the 029b update.
One of two HR20-700's, both of which are HDMI connected to TV, and both with eSATA's (FAP 750g)

Has there been a firmware substitution recently? Does seem strange that HR20s seem to be doing this lately . . .

look at the thread above in regards to 029b update issues. All of these issue have been happening to MANY people ever since the 029b update. It is not receiver specific. I also had the on again off again audio and video issues last night, both on recorded and none recorded material.
