Is dish sitting on a new HD STB?

I was explaining the current state of HD to a non-technical friend the other night. When I got to the Dish 6000 he had some interesting comments. New 6000's are not being made because of closed captioing rules, however, at the moment there is still supply in the channel.

Comming from a marketing background my friend was quick to point out that it's in Dish's and all of Dish's retailers interest to not announce any new HD STB until the 6000's are almost completely sold out of the channel.

So the quest is really, do we know for sure the 921 and 211 is all Dish has up it's sleve for this summer/fall?

You are likely correct. I read a CES 2003 report that included the following Dish HD STBs.

1. 921 (everyone knows about this one.
2. JVC TU-PVR9000RU (921 lite)
3. 211 Low cost Firewire tuner
4. 811 non PVR, Component/DVI OTA Tuner

Of course things are always subject to change.

...yet if they were trying to clear out inventory, look for a 6000 price reduction. It's not in their interest to stagnate the HD STB market by waiting for depletion of 6000 inventory at the regular prices. They will move the product with a discount prior to the introduction of a replacement. Like Charlie mentions in the chats, "Engineers always over promise".

Expect to hear more on the 6000's successor when the 211 and 921 are introduced circa September.

I likely won't get the 921 due to price. But I really do hate the ancient graphics of the 6000 menu. I'm really hoping the 811 really packs a nice punch. I'd like to get a working PSIP for my OTA viewing also, and hopefully a new OTA ATSC tuner chipset.

If the 811 has no RF/UHF remote, could this be a cheaper mass
made ird (like the 301)? Are the going to give the menu guide
more memory? Perhaps they are trying to clear 6000 inventory,
so they don't have to discount prices.
If the 811 or 211 isn't faster, I hope I find another of the last 6000 U's.
