Tech just came out and changed my box from HR20-100 to HR22 and now box will not recognize external Seagate Esata drive. Whats up with this? Please do not tell me I have lost all my recordings from HR20. That is the biggest reason I got the drive so when a box has to be changed I would save all my recordings. Losing them will really suck!!

I guess I'll be the bearer of bad news... you're recordings will not be viewable on the new box. THe recordings are linked to the receiver they were recorded on, and only THAT receiver is authorized to view them.
As to the Seagate not working on the HR22... I think the HR20 is, for some reason, the only HD-DVR that was happy with the Seagate FreeAgent Pro. The newer models don't play nice with it....

Dude...Your recordings are gone. Recordings are linked to the box and hence gone when the box goes. This is well documented. The FAP does not work with the HR22. Look on the bright side, you get to start over with more knowledge building a new eSATA storage unit. Do lots of reading and good luck..:)

Any idea why this is. This isn't making me very happy. You would think they would make these receivers more "consumer useful friendly".

Well you could yank the hard drive out of the FAP and stick it in an enclosure that will interface with the 22, or start from scratch. I'd start from scratch. The price on large hard drives has come down quiet a bit.

The basic thinking is that it prevents you from recording a bunch of shows and then taking it over to your friends house and watching them there...
If there was a way to link the recordings to an account rather than to the receiver, then it would allow you to save your recordings in the event that a receiver died.
I haven't followed the conversation very closely to see if there is a definitive reason why this can't/won't happen, but I know it's basically been said "don't hold your breath"!
It all boils down to copyrights and protecting the content, etc, etc.... I don't think it's likely you'll see this change anytime soon.

I just hooked up my new hr22 and I'm also in the market for a new external hard drive. Since the FAP is not an option, anyone have any reliable suggestions?

To the best of my knowledge, HR22's act like HR21's when it comes to eSATA.
The first post in this thread summarizes what we know about eSATA and HR21's.

That 1st post is long. If you don't wish to read it all, you might skip down to item #4 in that post and start there...
