Philadelphia: Still an Army-Navy Town (http://kyw1060.com/news_story_detail.cfm?newsitemid=28930)

Officials with the Army-Navy Game -- despite offers from many other cities -- have decided to keep the event here in Philadelphia for several more years.

City commerce director Jim Cuorato says that Philadelphia was eager to retain the event, because of both the prestige and the economic infusion it provided to the city. He adds that up to 15 other cities had made very serious proposals to capture the event.

However, Cuorato says, Philadelphia will be the home of the Army-Navy game for four of the five years between 2004 and 2008.

Baltimore will host the game in 2007.

This is good news to me. I've always thought it was a privilege for Philly to host the game. I like the idea of bouncing the game every couple years to NY and Baltimore, sort of a 'home game' for the Cadets and Midshipmen respectively. And maybe rotating the game to a distant venue once every few years. But the game should have a home base of Philadelphia most years.

PS What distant cities would be appropriate as 'alternate home games' for Army and Navy personnel? San Diego for the Navy, I guess, and the Marines have important facilites in the Carolinas. How about the Army. What well known Army bases are close to cities major football stadiums?

Army-Navy works best along the east coast, because the biggest concentration of military, especially West Point and Annapolis grads, is in the Washington, DC region.

As to bases, most Army facilities are off the beaten path by design. Major Navy/Marine bases would include Norfolk, Charleston, Jacksonville/Kings Bay, Pensacola, San Diego, and Bremerton (Seattle).

I'll have to ask my dad and father-in-law. They were both Army. I know my father in law way in Ohio for a while before going to Germany. So Ohio might work, either Cleveland or Cincinatti.

Taking the show overseas might be an interesting idea. (A big target however :( ) Germany might work well. They've got waht, a couple, afew NFL Europe teams, so it seems like they've have a good local fan base. Maybe once every ten years the Army could host, then the Navy the next decade. Good for morale, good for playing nice-nice with the locals, etc.

I believe that the Army-Navy game is a presitgious event that lends itself to being rotated and shared.
