Ok , I can't figure this out . I tried to add another HR to the network with a powerline adapter . I already have 2 adapters on the network that work fine . But tis one refuses to connect to the internet but it passes network even though I can't see it on my network page . I have tried power cycling everything but no go still . Is there something I'm missing . I set it with a static IP , all the other stuff is the same as the other adapters . Please help me :)

Why a static IP?

Why a static IP?
Because I have to much crap on the network and it makes it easier to ID them for me .
I understand you want to identify your gear. Did you try DHCP yet though?

No , I'll try that real quick . Tried it and box locked up . I will report back after it resets . I just don't get it everything else is fine and set up the same way .

When you say you can't see it on your network page, what do you mean. The DVRs shouldn't show up in My Network Places / Network Neighborhood but you should be able to ping them.

If I click on network on the computer all 4 show up with names , this one won't . Tried DHCP and no go .

Do you have a laptop you can test it out with? I have not used the powerline adapters but have heard that if the outlet is on a different leg of the circuit box it may not work.

No laptop , but why would it pass network if it was on a different leg ? Also whenever I restart the router VIIV quickly flash's new device connected to the network , but when I try to verify it , it's says the device has left the network . Going to try the Fyre TV box . No go with that either going to switch adapters see if it still happens . Nope still nothing . Just checked and that socket is on the otherside of panel than the powerstrip . Now what do I do ?

The DVR passes "network" if there is an ethernet device attached, not a real test.

One thing to try if you have MAC filtering enabled on your router add the MAC of the Powerline adapter to the approved list. Also check the security settings for the new powerline match the settings on the pre-existing (network name, etc.).

(One day soon, hopefully, I'll actually get to use it on a receiver or DVR.) Last night I observed substantially slower performance and even intermittent connection loss from the 2nd floor outlet to the basement router as compared to the main floor receptacle where I had previously tested it. I do think there is something to the theory of different cicuit legs.

Did you set a password for your network? If so, did you set the password in the new powerline adapter?

Just got done more troubleshooting . I have taken my Wii , PS3 , XBOX , FyreTV , and a HR20 that all work correctly and tried them on it and none of them will work either . Going to bring the box up here and try to connect . Will report back .

Box is now bricked , plug it in and the blue light flashes once and then nothing . Going to pull plug and try again in 20 min .

Yes, all four of my HR20's also show up in my network folder. Actually, they appear twice - each as a media share server and renderer. Of course I can't really "do" anything with them, but I can see them.

If you are trying to transmit anything over your electrical lines and the sender and receiver are on different legs of your service, then the signal must travel all the way back to the power company transformer, cross through it, and then travel back to the house. The distance and the trip through the transformer can degrade the signal. I don't know if there is anything for Powerline Ethernet, but there are many different "signal bridge" or "phase coupler" solutions for X10.

Box is done . What the hell could have happened ? All I did was bring it upstairs . Edit : Never mind just finally kicked on . Off for more testing .
Alright connects right away upstairs , works fine , see it on computer , streams fine . Any ideas out there ?

Called back got a refund . Time to drill some more holes in the house , yeaaaah !
sounds like a bad powerline adapter to me. can you test the adapter where you have one that works now?
and btw, i have 4 hr20's hooked up and i have 2-200amp panels in my house and the powerline adapter actually work from one panel to the other. the only way i could see the powerline adapter not working on a different circuit is if you have some old wiring(knob and tube) in your house and not te romex style.

Tried the adapter in 3 different places upstairs and it works fine . Tried it on different sockets downstairs and it won't work . House was bult in the late 70's .
hmmm, something in the home wiring is obviously interferring with the signal. looks like you are going to have to hard wire it or get a linksys wga600n wireless bridge.
a home built in the late 70's would have romex style wire(which it should work with)

What kind of speeds can you get via the powerline adaptors? Better than g? n?

Powerline adapters can get up to 200Mbps depending on which ones you get...you can pay the same amount, or more, for one that only gets 10Mbps.

There are currently three versions:
HomePlug 1.0 = 14 Mbps
HomePlug 1.0 Turbo = 85 Mbps
HomePlug A/V = 200 Mbps
The ones which Directv sells are 85 Mbps. Throughput will typically be much less (like half that speed).

I've got the HomePlug 1.0 Turbo units which top out at 85Mbps. I consistently get between 39 and 45Mbps thru the units between my bedroom (where cable modem is) and the den. Using a different plug in the wall, I was able to boost that to 60Mbps.
Of course, 39Mbps is still way faster than my internet connection, so it works just fine for me.
