Last night out of nowhere, we get a gray screen on the tv from our HR20-100 with an mx-1/WD greenpower 1tb esata hookup. Pressing the menu button got the menu, playlist gets the playlist, but gray screen behind it. Changing the channel would get a gray screen, 4-5 seconds of audio and then nothing but the gray screen. Playing a show from the playlist either gave the same gray screen and 4 seconds of audio, or an immediate "delete y/n".
I checked all the connections, rebooted. Same thing. I pulled the plug on the drive and receiver and waited 5 minutes, same thing.
I unplugged the e-sata and rebooted on the internal. Worked fine, no trouble with live tv or the couple of recordings on the internal drive from 6 months ago.
Reconnected the e-sata drive and it was weird. I could tune any SD channel or play any SD recording, but going to an HD channel or HD recording would get me audio only, gray screen. The audio kept playing.
I removed the WD drive from the mx-1 and put it back into the original Cavalry case it came in. Rebooted on that as the e-sata and everything works fine.
Other interesting observation: when I was using the drive in the Cavalry passive cooled case the first time, it was hot to the touch...really hot. Now its not.
I'm guessing the mx-1 failed or dropped into a mode where it wasnt passing data fast enough to the receiver...enough for SD but not HD.
Why the cavalry was hot before and isnt now...no idea. I'd tried it both horizontal and vertical before and it was hot both ways. Sitting in exactly the same place now as it was then.
