View Full Version : Anyone install a new psu in their Dell......
I've been wanting to upgrade the psu in my Dell Dimension 4700.I've been trying to find out if the connectors in the 4700 are standard Atx or proprietary. If not I'll scrap the purchase of the Dell compatible Pc Power & Cooling Psu (silencer 500) for something else. Anyone have the Dell Dimension 4700 and installed an off the shelf psu? Any problems? Thanks

I have in the past bought generic power supplies on line for Dell PC's without difficulty, make sure specs match and dimensions will fit.

Plenty of options out there.
Just search ebay (http://search.ebay.com/dell-4700-power-supply_W0QQcatrefZC3QQfromZR2QQsubmitsearchZSearch )
Hey guys thanks very much for your input. I appreciate it very much. I've seen the ones on ebay and if I remember correctly they topped out at 350 watts for the Dimension 4700. I think just to be on the safe side I'll purchase the Pc Power & Cooling psu. 500 is plenty to power the Video Card I am looking at. I've just seen a list of Dimensions that are known to be standard atx and the 4700 isnt on it but some still claim that it is non proprietary.

There was a 400 watt when I posted the ebay search link.
I didn't look much past that.
And what the devil do you need all that power for?
Adding a jackhammer?
I replaced the PS in my 4550 which is a year or so older than yours and it was standard pinout. I am pretty sure they stopped the proprietary stuff in 2000-2001.

Why you're all still guessing ? - Dell site have technical manuals for all computers !
Is it so hard to get it and read it?

Because the Video Cards I am looking to purchase require 450 watts. I like a little wiggle room. Yes I could probably get by with a 400 watt. Anyway thanks all for the input.

You can't use 400W PSU, if only one component - video card require 450W!
Go for 650W at least, your CPU, HDD, RAM, etc will need the 'juice' too. ;)

Probably because none of us wanted to look at Dell's site when the OP could do it. IT is much more fun to guess. :p
Here it is though.

Thanks Lee for providing the link. I've been there already . 10 & 11 pin on the dell are both
white. I took a look at the standard 24 pin atx and those are yellow. Im no pro
on this subject regarding whether the difference in color makes any difference or not. Since Im no expert in this arena my guess would be it does but I could be wrong. So off to Pc Power & Cooling I go for their Dell compatible psu. Thanks again fellas.
