Can I just buy a DTV DVR on eBAY to replace my existing NON DVR receiver? This is for a non HD tv set. I am asking because isn't my access card "married" to the existing receiver? If so, I think it can easily be unmarried. I just didn't know if DTV would help me since I am not buying the equipment directly from them.

I am looking at buying a: DIRECT TV RECEIVER R15-500 PLUS

Before you buy it get the RID number and call D* and ask them if there is a problem activating that receiver.... It might be leased, it might have an outstanding balance owed against it.

Do a search on here for "eBay" and read some of the cautionary statements about buying DirecTV equipment off of eBay - no need to rehash them here again.

Bottom line, eBay can be an OK avenue, but really isn't necessarily your best choice for DirecTV equipement.

The card on the ebay receiver cannot be transferred to your account. Sometimes they will let you transfer a card from another receiver, but you may need a new one, $20.

May I suggest a used HR10-250 off eBay instead of the R15 more recording time/better operating system (TiVo) and a HDTV tuner for off air recording for about the same price.

If you want the R15 call D* to see what an upgrade will cost you, you will need two lines from the dish to that location and you will probably end up with a 2 year lease commitment.

Plus if all you want is an R15 from DirecTV you can probably get that for free by just calling DirecTV. :)

When i called a few weeks ago and got a second R16 it was $99 and all they did was ship it to me... they told me that if i needed a tech to install it.. another $99 bucks

Which is why you should have gone to Best Buy, Circuit City, etc. and picked up a BRAND NEW R22 for the same price (and the same 2 year lease commitment reset).

Did you also get charged for shipping?
