The Satellite Broadcasting and Communications Association contacted Nevada state lawmakers concerning a proposed tax they're considering for satellite TV services.

Last week, SBCA President Andy Wright sent a letter to Nevada Gov. Kenny Guinn and members of the Nevada Senate and Assembly urging them to oppose the proposed satellite TV tax. Wright told lawmakers that the tax, which would exempt cable TV subscribers from the same levy, is anticompetitive and unfair.

Even though legislation carrying the proposed tax didn't pass out of the Senate Taxation committee, the cable industry continues to lobby for a tax on satellite TV subscribers, the SBCA said.

In March, Steve Schorr, vice president of Cox Communications, told the Las Vegas Review Journal that satellite TV companies delivering service to the state should pay taxes comparable to what cable companies must pay. Cox, which operates cable systems in the Las Vegas area, pays $11.4 million in 5 percent franchise taxes, he said.
