Has anyone gotten any deals from D* on an SWM? I would like to add another HR2x to my media room but all four cables are being used for the two HR2x dvrs I already have there. I am willing to buy another HR2x (from Costco for $169) but buying the SWM for full price would have a tough time getting by the CFO (wife).

I have never had any luck getting an SWM out of them. If you call them, they say they can't even ship them. So, I finally purchased one from solid signal.

Even though I needed a swm to fix the mess caused D* "updates" I still got stiffed by D* (huge surprise!). I bought mine at www.weaknees.com. It was a very simple install and works perfectly.

Um no it's not... there are tons of buy it now auctions for a complete new swm system (lnb, power inserter and both 4 and 8 way line splitetrs) for less then $60 including shipping....

There are even a few buy it nows for the same thing under $50 for that matter......

A simple ebay search for the following will yield you several:
SWM

How do you know what type of power inverter/splitter you would need in addition to the SWM

there is only one type of power inverter that is packaged with an swm.

As far as the splitter to be used it depends on how many lines your runing.. a 4 port will allow connection of 4 lines which will run upto 4 dual tuner IRDs....an 8 port---well upto 8 dual tuners....etc....

Some corrections.

It's a power inserter, not invertor.
The PI-21 can only work with the SWM LNB, while the PI-28 can work with either the SWM LNB or the SWM8 external module.
A single SWM (any version) can only support up to 8 SWM tunners.

I got mine off ebay a couple months ago. $110 for everything including the splitter and a couple of diplexors. I saw them going for 80 last week. Just keep an eye out.

With 4 cables a WB68 is a perfectly viable option there and they are really cheap on ebay. Do you have any other receivers besides those 2 in the media room? I'm going to guess you do. If you already have a WB68 cascading a second one off the first isn't recommended but 4 2 way splitters and you can hook the old one and a new one up in parallel which is supported. The only tricky part is you need to make sure the cables from one splitter go to the same input on both WB68 switches which will mean identifying your cable runs to the media center some how. If you actually happen to have a wb616 for your main switch then you are set. Just hook a wb68 up to the 4 cables and put up to 8 tuners there.

Do you have to have a power inserter or is this only for the 8 port spliters? Does anyone have one working with out the power inserter. Can some of you please list your parts from SWM LNB with one port to spliter and so on.

Thanks in advance.

No, the power inserter isn't optional. It is required.
