Just wanted to let everybody know that after a long bout of 771 errors and a tech visit and DVR exchange I decided to switch to SWM. All 771 problems are gone. Saw alot of posts here about it solving alot of problems. Only thing that burns my butt is when the tech came I asked him to switch me to SWM and he said he could not...only for new installs which is a bunch of horse hockey.

One key area in which SWM tech varies from standard multiswitch tech is that the SWM is powered. I'm a firm believer that most peoples' 771 errors are due to marginal cabling, marginal multiswitch performance and/or tuners starting to go bad on a receiver. In two years on a standard multiswitch I never had 771 errors to speak of (once in a very great while I'd get a split second 771 before the signal locked in, but that's it). Since switching to an SWM setup almost two months ago I haven't seen one at all.

I like to second this motion. It has saved me hours of work and spools of wire. :D

I hope you will report back, two years hence, on your experience with SWM and 771 errors. I don't have SWM and I don't have 771 errors. I'm curious as to what would be the difference between your origonal setup that caused the 771 and mine that doesn't have 771 issues.

The difference is an unpowered mechanical multiswitch supporting a heavy load of tuners versus a powered SWM system doing the same.
My 771's were very intermittent flashes at the bottom of the screen, and never resulted in any unplayable recordings or issues of that nature, but they have disappeared completely in the last two months since I put in the SWM.

I have to agree with Lefty. I have seen personally 771 errors all over an HR21 x2 set up. SWM LNB fixed it. Dead on. I am on SWM and have been for a while. 7 tuners never an 771 error. I even switch dvr's that are on the setup sometimes, Still never an issue
I had an unpowered slim line with an hr-20 with issues. The tech replaced it with an hr-22 to "fix the issue" but left the box.
I reactivated it on a different swm setup and all was fine (with 7 tuners). It is clearly a software bug considering no one had issues before the 029b update.
Quit looking for boogy men, it is their crappy software and lack of knowledge of how it works. People happened to stumble on the solution by trying multiple things.

I agree with the software bug as I did not have ANY problems until the last update. Keep in mind that before I switched to SWM DTV tech replaced the BBC's, LNB and receiver and problem was still there but not as bad. I also ran 2 new cable lines from the dish to receiver and that did not help either.

I've had SWM for about nine months and haven't seen a 771 since.
However, I didn't have a problem prior to that. Only the occasional error but now none.
I can't say it's related but it sure seems to be so for others.
