This is my first post. Be nice.

I recently had D tv installed at my house (11/30/08), dropped cable, ah freedom. I read up on all the newest tech here in DBStalk and thought I had a pretty good idea of what to expect. You know, big dish, 4 coax wires from the dish, even knew to double check the ground. The installer was great and answered all my questions and was very nice when I put the power strip away behind the unit and accidently turned off the tv system right in the middle of the HD DVR set up forcing him to start over. oops. (I felt really bad to, he had just gotten a person on the phone to verify set-up).

But what I got threw me off. I was expecting a slimline with three white things on the ends of the mast. What I got was one thing on the mast. (See picture below)

When I go buy another HD DVR from Costco or Best Buy Will I have to do anymore wiring?

Will I be able to use old Directv Tivo equipment, even SD stuff, not even the HR10-250? (Im thinking no.)

Most importantly, what is this set-up called? Dtv account names it Direct 5-LNB Multi-Satellite Dish.

Why are there not 4 cables coming from it?

Why didnt he hook up the BBC's that came in the box?
(also this one came with a HDMI cable and component cable in the box)

Does the HD DVR have to be hooked up to a phone line or ethernet?

Here is the setup.

HR22-100 in living room with a power inserter thingy
D-12 (I think) standard box
Slimline with ??? 5lnb, 3lnb???

As you can see, I am satellite ignorant. I really want to stress he the installer was a very great guy. Answered my wifes questions and all. Especially since it was a "free install" which, I think I've been reading right, does not make you installers very much money.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

You got a SWM 3 lnb dish. Directv is moving everything to the 101, 103 and 99 sats. There is no longer a need for the 110 and 119 sats so now they are only installing the 3 LNB dishes. If they installes a 8 way splitter on the one line comming in from the dish then just hook up a line to that for an additional receiver. However older receivers will not work on that system.

For the record, this only applies to some markets. Many markets still get their SD locals from 119 and still require a 5 LNB dish.

for the future remember that you have only 8 line (tuners) available. with the boxes you have listed, it means you have used 3 of them. dvr's still use 2 lines. you can get any combination of boxes just as long as you keep it to 8

When I go buy another HD DVR from Costco or Best Buy Will I have to do anymore wiring? That depends on where the dish hooked in and how the wire is run in your home. If it home runs from each room to a single location, you should be OK. If it is a succession of splitters, you may be in trouble. Will I be able to use old Directv Tivo equipment, even SD stuff, not even the HR10-250? (Im thinking no.)You are correct. No legacy anything. Why are there not 4 cables coming from it?

Why didnt he hook up the BBC's that came in the box?See more at Single Wire Multiswitch (SWM).Does the HD DVR have to be hooked up to a phone line or ethernet? No, but there may be features that entice you to do so.

Phone line and/or ethernet are only required if you want to do Pay Per View ordering using your remote. You can still order PPV via the website. Ethernet will also get you DirecTV on Demand, ability to download content from the Internet for viewing on your machine. Additionally, there is MediaShare, although it is still in beta testing. With MediaShare you can view pictures and (MPEG2) videos streamed from your PC to your machine. You can also listen to music in this manner, streamed from your PC to your DirecTV machine. Just released, and using your ethernet connection, is DirecTV2PC, although this is still a beta product; a streaming capability from your DirecTV machine to your PC. DirecTV2PC requires pretty powerful computer to handle the load for streaming HD content. Additionally, it appears that Multi-Room Viewing (watch a DVR recorded program on a machine in another room) will be utilizing your ethernet connections.

As far as the outside work is concerned.

- Unnecessary barrel at ODU. I know D now sends out LNBs with jumpers and barrels, but they are too short and over time water will get in. But I guess you can't blame the tech.

- No drop / service loops at the splitter.
with a little extra wire from the ODU he could have placed the splitter more proteced and made sure there were drip loops.

- Ground seems OK. Can't see where groudn is attached to ODU.

It's barely passes from what I can see.

All this is great information. Thank you.

Unfortunately I am getting blocks and choppy picture on some HD channels. Im thinking it may be due to the use of previous cable installed like 7 years ago by another sat company. The tech did not install new cable.

That is possible, Then again I have used everything down to RG59 on SWM with success.

What are some recomendations?

Put a rain loop before the splitter? Place the splitter under the roof to the left?

Are those two ports not hooked up, capped off, expansion slots for more coax?

Thank you

Yes on both. Sadly he didn't pull enough wire.

Yes

Should D be comingback to fix this or should I just buy some coax and get some tools and make my own pulls?
