I'm looking forward to testing Windows 7 when it becomes publically available for testing and have a couple systems I could use but am curious if anyone knows what the minimum (and recommended) system requirements will be for Windows 7.

For instance, I have an older latop (2004 era) that has a Celeron M processor running at 1.5ghz with 1.25 GB of RAM and 40 GB harddrive. It's running XP SP3 very well but would gladly offload XP to use Windows 7 if it will run effectively on this system.

I also have modern, robust system (quad core 2.67 ghz processor, 8 GB RAM, 2 x 500 GB harddrives) running Vista 64 bit. I"d prefer not to mess with the Vista installation and leave that intact. What's the best way to run Windows 7 on this system? Run it via Virtual Machine, or set up a dual boot and run Windows 7 on the dual boot?

Thanks

It will probably RUN on the laptop, but it isn't going to run well. You need more processor, more RAM (especially!), and more video power to get it running well. That would be just as true running Vista.

Win7 isn't going to be much different from Vista at all, except that minimum specs may be slightly higher, even if it runs slightly faster all around. Minimum specs aren't going to go DOWN after 2 years.

Based on their track record...

Actually, the stuff I have read says that the betas or alphas they have released so far run slightly better than Vista on similar hardware. Not sure if this extends very far down to really light machines though.

I ran it on an old Dell 600 laptop with 512 MB RAM with no problems.
It takes a couple of minutes to get up and running, but it's fine once it's on its feet.
