View Full Version : Terminating Switch ports???

I have a slimline dish with 4 cables from the LNB. I am going to follow the advice of many on this forum and split them feeding a WB616 and I am installing a new SWM multi-switch. The SWM multi-switch will feed a SWM 8-splitter to drive 8 HR22 tuners (a couple of units will be acquired in the near future).

I need advice on a couple of issues:

1. When I connect the PI to SWM1, the PI has an output port IRD. Does this port have to be connected directly to a single IRD or can I connect the SWM 8-splitter to this port?

2. I understand I can connect the SWM 8-splitter to SWM2 but then I need to terminate the IRD port on the PI. Correct? Do I use a standard 75 ohm terminator?

3. If I have any unused ports on the SWM 8-splitter should they be terminated until I connect additional tuners?

4. Do any unused ports on the SWM multi-switch (legacy or others) need to be terminated if not used?

5. Do I use the standard 75 ohm terminator for all terminations or do I need some special terminator?

Thanks for the help. The expertise and help on this forum is unbelievable!!!:D

my ird out on PI is feeding a SWS4 splitter. it was using SWS8 at one time but I changed to -4 to better fit the needs. the swm2 output on the swm8 box was left alone, it came with terminator attached.

I have my PI connected directly to my IRD and all unused ports are terminated with a 75 ohm and it works fine

"Normal"

Have we covered these?

Yes VOS, that covers everything! Thanks to all for the help.

Based on the subject, I thought this might be a discussion on whether or not your unused network switch ports needed to be terminated or not... I guess I wasn't in the right frame of mind when reading the subject.

Sorry for any confusion!

You say you plan to feed 8 HR22 tuners (Receivers??). You can only feed 4 HR22 receivers with each SWM8 unit. Each HRxx receiver uses two of the 8 available SWM channels. I would suggest that you use a SWM 4 way splitter if all of your receivers are HRxx units. Its always a best practice to terminate all unused splitter ports.

Thanks for your note. I will be running 8 tuners (4 HR22 receivers).

Go with a 4-way splitter, as each receiver will have a higher [twice] signal level than you would terminating half of the ports of an 8-way.

75-ohm resistor caps should be used on all open SWM lines/splitter ports. They should NOT be used on multiswitch ports (as is), as the resister can damage the switch.

I will use the caps to seal multiswitch ports if the switch is going to be outside, but only after removing the "stinger" of the resistor. It is then simply a cap to keep moisture out.

I did the same thing with my muti-switch even tho its inside... give's it that professional look...
