I'm upgrading to Dish HD and the VIP 722, the installer is coming tomorrow.....I have these components and need some help/opinions on how to set it up with connections to get the most out of it, sound/video etc....The components are:
VIP 722 HDMI capable
Samsung LN46A650 HDTV
Samsung 2500 Blu-ray HDMI capable
Onkyo STR-606 3 HDM capable
Klipsch Quentet III speakers
Klipsch sub10 subwoofer

I'm going to run one HDMI cable from my Dish 722's HDMI "OUT" to my TV's HDMI1 "IN" (that sends a HD & SD video signal from the 722/satellite to the TV and sends 2 channel stereo audio signal to the TV to watch and listen to news etc from the TV and its speakers) I might not have expressed it correctly but I hope you can follow......

then...I connect an optical audio cable from the 722 "OUT" to the optical audio "IN" of the 606 to send the Dolby digital 5.1 audio signal from the 722 satellite to the 606 then I resend it (after upconverting) back to the TV when I want to watch Dolby digital programming from 722 by sending it through an HDMI cable from the "OUT" of the 606 to the HDMI2 "IN" of the TV.....I select HDMI1 when wanting to watch TV with its own speakers, I select HDMI2 when I want to crank up the 606 for Dolby Digital 5.1? (I sure hope I got that right, I'll be so happy if I do....)

Now if I want to watch Dolby digital Blu-ray....I hookup the HDMI "out" from the Blu-ray player to the Onkyo 606 HDMI "in" and from the Onkyo HDMI "{out) to the HDMI "in" of the Samsung 650 TV...from what I understand that way I'll be able to hear some of the new audio formats, Dolby Tru-HD etc that are available on some of the new Blu-ray discs....I read that those new formats don't work with digital optical audio cables, hence the all HDMI setup....

If I sound new to this its cause I am......I read alot but have never had any hands on experience with this. Any input from you folks will be greatly appreciated.....thanks for anything you could help me with on this. I can't wait for the installer to show tomorrow, my family is pretty excited about all this.

Choices, choices, choices.

If you are going to run your Blu-ray via HDMI to your Onkyo, you might as well run your ViP722 to your Onkyo with HDMI too. You would then run HDMI out of your Onkyo to your TV. The Onkyo would provide the switching between the 722 and Blu-ray sources. The only problem with that setup is that your Onkyo will have to be powered up to watch TV at all. I have my system setup like this. However, to give me an option of watching TV without the receiver on, I ran component vid (and analog audio) out of the 722 to a 2nd set up inputs on the TV.

I have a ln55a950 and I ran HDMI to TV optical out to my Sony surround system.
It seams to work good. I just installed the TV last weekend and it seams to work
fine.

etzeppy and daveray, thanks to both of you for suggestions.....I certainly appreciate it..........and yes there are many, many choices, but I reckon too many is better than too few.......Again thanks
