I just had a SL3 dish installed and everything works on all receivers except the HD-DVR. The installer is telling me I need to see the 119 Sat in order for it to work and i cant see it. I thought the SL3 prevented this... am I wrong?

The real SL3 enables you to see all the HD except the channels 70-79. The installer is mistaken.

Peace,
Tom

That was the quick, cuz the installer is here answer.

The longer answer is you are correct. The only HD you "lose" is the mirrored, older HD channels at 70-79. They better versions are on 99/101/103 so you don't lose them anyway.

And the guide (and other important) data at 119 is a copy of the guide data at 101, which the SL3 mirrors for you so the 119 isn't necessary for that either.

Peace,
Tom

thanks but he will not listen to me and refused to try and figure it out. Should I be calling Directv?? I really do not know what to do because he is very insistent that I am wrong and he is right.

First, do not sign anything. That will get his attention--he doesn't get paid. :)

Second, either have him call his supervisor or let you call DIRECTV yourself. (Frown if he makes you do it.)

If you call, ask immediately for installation tech. They will help you help him find a new job...

Good luck,
Tom

What are the signal strengths on 99 and 103? If strong, my guess is he has the dvr configured for the wrong dish type.

Or DIRECTV hasn't enabled HD on your account correctly? Do you get a 721 error?

Peace,
Tom

First I really appreciate your help here. The tech left already and is supposed to return tomorrow. I just wanted him out so I could call DTV and ask for a supervisor. he left the equipment in place

If I am doing this correctly my signal strength on the 101 is:
Tuner 1 - 98%
tuner 2 - 98%

99(c)
Tuner 1 - 95%
tuner 2 - 95%

99(s)
is not acquired

103(c)
96%
96%

and SWM:
100%
100%

I am in Washington (well just outside in MD) but I get the locals just fine so I assume they are on the 101.

Those look good. What happens when you tune to Channel 202 on your HDDVR. Do you get any error messages?

your locals are on 101 and 99S
there should be only a few numbers on the 99S, most of them are not needed. you do not need 110 or 119

So what exactly "doesn't work" on the HD DVR?

In that case, you may not have HD Access activated on your account yet, unless you have another HD box in your house. How bout Ch 100?

EDIT: If so, I'd call DirecTV and get that sucker turned on, then report back to us if you're missing any channels

With a SWM LNB & current software on the HRs, the installer has no choice in choosing which LNB 3 vs 5. The software is aware of what LNB is there.

Your guy needs a bit more training on the SWMs & the SL3 in general.

Curt,

Well done........you know what is coming............THIS tech screwed the pooch because he was kicked out the door without enough experience (MY opinion.)

I have learned more about the work I do HERE than any formal training DTV offered. I picked much up along the way.

I have spoken to people who presented themselves as DTV managers that I just know sold used cars before their DTV job. ........ as in, "if you have a problem with this vehicle...I mean install.....just bring it back...or call us.

You and Tom deal with this every day.............I have been told by call centers either...........I am sorry your question reached me for I cannot answer........or Hmmmm, ya got me..call back.

As Charlie Brown mentioned..."...we have met the enemy and they are us!"

The HSPs have the recent SWM stuff and I am not keeping up......fading away.

Joe

What happend to the OP today is why i pay close attention to this forum and learn everything i can from the many helpful people that are here... :joy:

I seriously REFUSE to let a D* tech come on my property and work on my system... !pusht!

This is why i choose to pay more and buy my own stuff and do self installs... it's less :hair: this way!

firefighter4evr, another approach, which gives you some of the advantages of the deals you can get from DIRECTV, is to have everything ready for the installer before he arrives. Then hand him a cold drink (hot in the winter) while you hook things up for him. :)

He gets out very quickly with full credit, you get freebies and/or better deals (by dealing with DIRECTV), and some installers will actually double check things to make sure you did it right (so they don't have QC problems down the road).

Peace,
Tom

This is one of many sage posts I've seen from the wise one. It's not something that should be "expected" of a customer, but knowledge is power and a great headache reducer. Great post Tom.
