I've been wondering about what's the best way to get audio a little louder when watching TV.

Currently, TV [Sony 40VL130] is hooked up via HDMI to an H21. I was thinking of hooking up an amplified sound bar either to the H21 or to the TV itself.

I've got a Yamaha RX-V661 a/v receiver with a 5.1 Klipsch setup but I don't want to turn that on just for watching TV.

What do you guys think?

I have a HR21 hooked up via HDMI to a panasonic plasma and just simple red/white audio and also using TOSLink to my a/v receiver for when I want a little more volume and when I just want tv speakers the receiver is off. You could do the same thing with the sound bar.

What's the aversion to firing up the Yamaha/Klipsch system? I have the speakers on my TV turned off. I use the HR20's optical out to my Denon 5305 driving my SpeakerCraft in-ceiling AIM8's for all viewing. of course it helps to have a good remote to tie it all together.

The OP might have someone sleeping at the time the tv is being watched and doesnt want to disturb. I know thats my case, my son sleeps during prime time viewing hours so no extra audio for me.

Why not connect H21 to whatever is best avail.connection on avr also, then when you want low volume just use tv speakers and when you want louder you can have it.You can always just pass the audio signal through your avr and just listen to tv speakers.

Does your receiver have a night mode? Try that before buying anything.

Why wouldn't you want to turn your AUDIO/VIDEO reciever on JUST for watching tv? Uh... That's what it's for.
I haven't listened to tv audio through tv speakers for 20 years.
And the last time I checked, those things have volume adjustment on them, so if someone is sleeping, you can turn it down... however your orignal post says you want it louder... I'm not sure what you're asking.

I only turn on my receiver if I'm watching a dvd. And If I did go that route, I need to check on night mode setting and see how that works. I just don't want to activate my 5.1 speaker system by doing that.

I found that my tv volume settings were not the greatest even when tweaked already.

I want a little more sound than what the tv can put out but not loud enough that a receiver and 6 speakers can.

Yamaha calls night mode Night Listening Enhancer. These things usually compress the sound so that the soft sounds are louder and the loud sounds are softer. You get cinema sound without waking the baby.

I cannot help much. My plasma's speakers have almost never been used. I always listen through the receiver. Good sound is as important to me as video.

You should trun it on for TV to get 5.1 sound your tv speakers only give you 2.0.
