Hi all,

This is a new development and I can't seem to figure out what hidden setting needs to be changed in order to prevent this.

I have a LAN connection and have the network settings in my Windows XP Home set to "never dial". This has worked fine for months. But something changed at some point and I can't figure out what it is.

Now every so often while surfing around, the DUN log-on screen pops up. I go to "settings" and the networking settings say "dial a connection". I change the setting to "never dial" and I can continue to surf merrily away for a while. Then the DUN screen will reappear. And again the settings are "Dial". I've reset this thing at least a dozen times and have confirmed that "automatic" is NOT checked in the advanced screen.

What stupid little setting am I missing? Can anyone help?

See ya
Tony

I had a similar problem a while ago, I ended up deleting the connection and putting back. That fixed it.

In Control Panel (I'm in front of a Win2000 machine, so this may be wrong, but might get you closer) there is INTERNET OPTIONS.

There will list all your dialup options, you want none of them to dial out automatically (only when you click on them, not at any other time) Wish I had better graphic with better content

Are you using using Outlook Express 5 or 6? You may want to go into Tools, then Accounts, select the mail account and select Properties. Click on the Connections tab and make sure that Always Connect Using is NOT checked.

This may be surprising, but I actually had a customer who had this problem while using a hotel's Internet connection. The hotel IT person didn't have a clue, the hotels Internet provider didn't have a clue, and I had the problem solved within 5 minutes.

Eudora, some virus updaters, anything that tries to update itself could have a setting to use DUN. The funny thing about XP is that depending on how you set up the dial up connection deppends on how it looks and how it works. Like in the picture above if you use the "setup" button to make the DUN connection it will act different than if you use the "add" button to make the connection. Then it will also work/look different if you use IE/Outlook to dial than if you use a non-MS program that uses the "phone book entry" that those programs are allowed to use. The problem I had was that I would be conncted with the modem but I would get phone book entry errors when a network connection tried to dial.

Check the phone book properties and the dialing rules in the control panel and something is probably checked or unchecked. I also had something that kept setting mine to never dial at times when it was suppose to be set to always dial.

I would suspect a windows update in the last few months made some changes to the DUN somehow.
