Sacramento's TV sweeps contest is fought by dawn's early light
As last Friday's 6 a.m. newscast came to a close on News10 (KXTV), the station's ever-effulgent morning anchor, Dan Elliott, smiled into the camera and gave his signature sign-off: "Thanks for spending some time with us."
Elliott had no idea just how many people he was talking to. But on Monday morning, he heard the surprising news: Almost as many people had tuned in to "News10 Good Morning" between 6 and 7 a.m. Friday as had watched "KCRA 3 Reports at 6."
That this happened on the second day of May sweeps -- a critical monthlong period when Nielsen numbers are used to set advertising rates -- made it even sweeter for Elliott and his co-workers, who have become obsessed with beating this market's longtime ratings juggernaut, KCRA (Channel 3).
