I am getting a 508. Doing the self install. Is tehre anything I need to know? Any hints from the experts? I have looked at the on line manuals. But I have heard that a bad install can damage these units.

Also would you recommend retiting my 7200 (it would be sans PTV) or my 3700.

I'd retire the Dishplayer... The 3700 may get slow in the EPG, but at least it "always" will work...

Do not move the receiver while it is plugged in.

I was hoping to usre the pause feature and the guide on the 7200. But you may be right. I never think of the 3700.

and which receiver can't be moved while plugged in?

Any Dish PVR receiver (7100, 7200, 501, 508, 721, 921 when released, etc.)

When doing the install, after it connects to the sat signal, it displays a message about how its going to update the software and not to disconnect anything. Then the screen goes blank for several minutes. Take the warning seriously and don't touch the box until the picture comes back. Had a Dish installer kill a box by pulling the plug while commenting "That's not right".

Other than that, its pretty straight forward. I self-installed the replacement unit after that fiasco.

You shouldn't move a 50x (or 721) while it is plugged in, just in case the drive is spinning. Can lead to a head crash.

Thanks bearklaw I am pretty sure that the situation in your first pot was exactly what I had heard about before. Who knows maybe I would have paniced.
