When I see 50 channels of HD then i'll believe it.

Finally DBS is getting exciting again with some new technology.

I remember people talking about how it has stalled out and not as exciting as it used to be but with this new satellite and HD channels and then Rainbow at 61.5 coming at the end of the year with a 13 inch dish, and then the new provider coming to 105.5 these are getting to be exciting times once again.

The 121 move by dish is a brilliant move. They suddenly added 32 CONUS transponders. They now will have 82 CONUS transponders to DirecTV's 46.

Now, don't count out DirecTV they could decide to suddenly acquire a Ku-FSS bird and make a quad dish. There is tons of Ku-FSS capacity available.

And this is not counting if Dish were to buy out Cablevision's Rainbow service out in the future, just imagine the possibilities then. They could make that the slot for all international customers while American customers get the 110/119/121 and this would further free up space for this 3-slot dish. Also at 61.5 they could use that to put other channels that are not as popular or other specialty channels.

Hasn't DirecTV had HDNet for several months now?

They have had it for over a year at least.

The HDNet that DirecTV has is going away. 2 new channels are coming out instead. Although I have not seen an announcement out of D* that they will carry the new HDNet, I would assume that they would.

Yes DTv has had hdnet for year or more but DTV does not have HD Movies. To me it just seems like Dish is leading the way for HDTV with adding these channels and also saying that they have ablity add 50 more.

I just want DTV to stop setting on side line and get in the game. Right now DTV is leading the game with subs but Dish seems to be catching up fast!

DISH . Who would be stupid enough to switch to dish . you want your kids watching the sex channels , which dish does . Dish hasplanns for local channels like directv does . so stay with directv . the freindly company . if you go dish remember your kids can watch sex channels and charlie can't do anything about it .

Uhh, what...

Both Dish & DirecTV offer "adult" programming. Dish also offers you the ability to block them from showing in your EPG via the Adult Guard feature (I am a D* sub, but used to have E*)

Let's see, on the DirecTV web site it shows "A Taste of Spice", "Playboy TV", "Spice Platunum", "The Hot Network" and "The Hot Zone" for adult programming. So it's alright for your kids to watch any of those channels that show great movies such as "Buttman's Bend Over Babe 6" or Jules Jordan's Flesh Hunter 4"??? Also, have you every heard of parental lock out features on receivers, if not you ought to read up on it before going off on a rant.

Getting back to the original topic, the thing I hate about Directv is that they claim they have no more bandwidth for HDTV, yet they recently added a second Chinese language package (I didn't even know they had a first). Is there that many subs that want Chinese language packages?

Well I believe big D is supposed to launch another sat this summer. I'm going to hang around awhile just see how that plays out. Hopefully with the selling of the company and the additional sat they can get down to business. However, if they don't then it's been a nice ride. I'm sure Dish would love to have my $100+ bill a month. Let's hope it really doesn't come to this because I really like DTV. However, why continue to ride a dead horse when there is a Mustang sitting next to you with the keys?

Take some advice DTV
“If you build it they will come!!!”
Moreover, if they build it we will LEAVE!!!!:hi:

There will be rollouts of all kinds of new services between D* and E* soon. This why competition is so good. In the mean time we should relax and enjoy the ride.

Well I believe big D is supposed to launch another sat this summer. I'm going to hang around awhile just see how that plays out.

The new bird, DirecTV7S, will be a spot beam satellite for the 119 location. It will free up some space that can be used for CONUS.

E* and D* leapfrog past each other each time one gets a new bird up or rolls out some technology. Trust me several months from now the threads in this group will be "E* is resting on its laurels" and "D* leads" and so forth.

Mike123abc

As a comparison between E* and D* after 121 launch and D-7s launch assuming both are successful:

D* with 3 uplink sites will have 88 spot beams (after it opens its announced 3rd uplink site). These will use 12 of its 46 national transponders (6 on 101 and 6 on 119).

Dish will have 50 spot beams these use 10 of its national DBS transponders (5 on 119 and 5 on 110). Dish will then have 32 transponders on 121. Assuming they use them for local in local it will be the equivalent of 32 more spot beams (spot beams that just happen to hit the whole us).

Local: Dish 82 Direct 88 -- Direct has 6 transponder semi advantage.

National: Dish has 40 Direct has 34. Dish definitely has a 6 transponder advantage.

Dish has the wings that it could use for international, 17 in the east 24 in the west.

So, in essence 121 brings Dish up to near where Direct will be fore Local in Local capacity. 88 vs 82 is probably about the same capacity since D*s point to certain areas of the country limiting them to that area, E* has the advantage that they could break up DMAs over multiple transponders on 121 since they are all national.

Now when it comes to HDTV Dish has a current big advantage. A 50% advantage because E* uses 8PSK where D* uses QPSK.

Don't forget that Dish has also signed up to lease a bunch of space at 105.

I'll make this simple...

Dump DirecTv, Buy Dish.

(OK, let it fly !!!!)

Actually after some thought I think I miscalculated the uplink capacity of DirecTV at 119. If they have 3 uplink sites they would be able to us all 44 spots on D-4s. Right now they cannot use 6 of the spot transponders because they only have 2 uplink centers working:

On 101: 32 uplink transponder frequencies X 2 uplink sites = 64 uplinks. 26 of the uplinks for national, 64-26 = 38 spots that can be used now. When 3 uplink 3x32 = 96. 96 - 26 = 70 more than enough for the 44 spots.

On 119: 11 uplink frequencies (Dish has the other 21) X 3 sites = 33 uplinks. 33 - 5 National (assuming that they use 6 frequencies for spots like D-4s, but even if they do not it works about the same) = 28 extra uplinks. So they could have 28 spots on 119.

28 on 119 + 44 on 101 = 72 spot transponders in theory plus or minus a bit if they have more/less national.

So, with 121 Dish will definitely have the advantage in both LIL spots (82 vs 72+-) and in national 40 vs 34*.

*note 34 could be as high as 36 but more likely 34-35 if they want to max LIL.

When Rupert comes along he is going to buy up every last sat slot in the US, hopefully Charlie doesnt buy them all first.

Here we go again.. The "my provider is better, yours is crap" war.

Personally I can wait on more HD. I don't have a HDTV yet. It costs too much money. I'm just glad I don't have equipment issues like DISH does. With D* I have TiVo, which has name based recording. Do you have that on DISH?

What about Sunday ticket? Do you have that on DISH? DISH users can't get that for another 5 years.

Say, how much does it cost to downgrade a programming package on DISH? We don't pay anything with D*.

And oh, by the way, speaking of HD, besides all the OTA I can get in NYC, D* has had HDNET for over a year now, while DISH had what?

Mike123abc
05-03-03, 09:48 AM
Raj2001 the problem has always been that Dish will have all the technology and never use it. Dish has always had more satellite slots. Dish turned to 8PSK.

DirecTV has used technology. They have much more sofisticated spot beam satellites, maximizing the slots that they have.

It will be interesting to see if Dish ever uses its licenses to an advantage.

Phone numbers for each service:

Directv: 1-800-Feel-TheJoy
Dish: 1-800-Ihate-Sports

As Raj pointed out the difference for me and the MAIN reasons I stay with D* are
1. Stable equipment
2. I am a huge sports fan. (NFL Sunday Ticket and MLB EI rock..Closest thing Dish subs come to baseball is cricket :D.) I as well do not have HD service yet not enough to justify the cost although its going to be appealing once football season starts as the contract calls for HD football this year on the Ticket....But regardless the fun will be when the FLAWLESS Directv Tivo comes out in a few months.....Then at that time I may sub to HD service with a dish that is no where near a 5 foot monster SuperDish....Charlie can take that and shove it....Enjoy your monster dish, Dish subs.

I hate these kind of discussions 'My DBS provider can kick your DBS prover's ass any day of the week'. Everyone has there own reason for going or not going with which ever provider they choose. I could careless about most sports, the size or how many dishes I need, HD programming. In my mind DirecTV has three major advantages, the DirecTiVo, much larger selection of hardware and Total Choice Plus w/Locals. DirecTV has had HD Net from the beginning because that where Mark Cuban wanted it, so the argument that D* has had HD Net for well over a year doesn't fly with me.

Mike123abc:

From what I have gathered, DirecTV will employ 4 spots on DirecTV 7-S at 119. DirecTV is opening two new uplink centers: one in Oakdale, Minnesota, and another in Winchester, Virginia.

Therefore, once all of the above equipment is in place and active, DirecTV will have 11 transponders at 119, will have 44 uplink frequencies (11 transponder uplinks times four sites). Using four transponders as spot beams will leave seven national transponders. Subtracting seven from the 44 uplink sites will leave 37 spot-beam transponders at 119.

That's what I was pointing out. Discussions over which provider is better are pointless, because they both have their strong points.

Some people also worship their providers like if it's a religion. I wouldn't be surprised if I see "The Church of Charlie" or "the Murdoch movement" soon
