Nets Had Limited Attention Span for Bush

Television networks carried President Bush's speech Thursday from a color-splashed aircraft carrier deck, but many appeared to have a limited attention span.

Less than two minutes after Bush stopped talking, CBS' Dan Rather introduced an episode of TV's most popular show, "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation." NBC was back to a "Friends" episode that had been interrupted in midstream. Fox showed cops arresting criminals.

ABC stayed with news, but within 10 minutes was telling about a young New York City actress killed by her ex-boyfriend.

Even Fox News Channel, with the most vociferous war supporters, noted the political symbolism.

Was it political? No doubt it was, and we will be seeing copies of thoses photos during the next presidential campaign. You bet!

But it was also President Bush's most outstanding moment since he took office, in my opinion. It was inspiring, it was statesmen-like, and it was a proud moment for the USA as well. When you contrast this moment with those of Saddam shortly before the fall of Baghdad, you see the great difference.
