Will there be any advantage whatsoever if I use a High Speed HDMI cable to connect my HD DVR to my 120Hz 46" 1080p LCD HDTV rather than using the supplied DIRECTV HDMI cable??

Seriously doubt it.

None that I can see, unless it's a very long distance.

An HDMI cable is a cable with several unshielded twisted pairs, much like CAT5/CAT6 Ethernet cable, and in fact, you can run HDMI data over 2 lines of CAT6 with no problem, though you have to have the HDMI connectors for the ends, and those aren't easy to come by.

A 10' CAT6 cable costs $3. It is used to carry digital computer data just like an HDMI cable does, yet most would agree that computer data is MORE sensitive to data corruption than TV content. Yet, we still trust that $3 CAT6 cable every day.

What's the likelyhood that the 1's and 0's that come out of the cheap HDMI cable are "less good" than the 1's and 0's that come out of the expensive HDMI cable?

HDMI cables are only expensive because people don't know any better.

and if you do need a longer one, check out www.monoprice.com

They have very fair prices on long cables. Just got a 35ft DVI - HDMI for my projector for $35

Their cables and service are great!

I've gotten gold contact, quad shielding cables their for less than 1/2 of regular cables elsewhere - I share Gentz's recommendation.

...and because of folks like Monster Cable sell their products for 2X or 3X the price and made their founder a multi-millionaire in the process. :eek2:

I just hate seeing people get ripped off on cables.

Check this speaker cable (http://www.amazon.com/AudioQuest-K2-terminated-speaker-cable/dp/B000J36XR2/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1230154218&sr=1-5)out.

I didn't realize that they had cables that expensive. It's completely ridiculous.

I am building a house and just had this conversation this afternoon. The low voltage guy said that we can run 2 lines of cat5e through the walls for over the fireplace. Then, you use the connectors for the 2 cat5e ports to HDMI. Does anyone see any concern or issue with this way to go?

Unreal.... :eek2: :eek2: :eek2:

What's even more unreal is that I have AudioQuest (the same manufacturer) Type 4 shield cable running to all my THX7.1 speakers in the Home Theater....and I thought the $2.50 a linear foot (running to all the speakers) was expensive....whoa.

Better hurry up and order..they only have 1 pair in stock... :D

It *can* be done, but I would prefer a real HDMI cable. As I mentioned, terminating CAT5 for HDMI isn't easy. Monoprice cables are cheap and work fine, though I prefer cables from BlueJeansCable.com for anything that is of longer length or is going to be permanently encased in a wall (Monoprice cables are fine anywhere that it's easy to replace the cable if it breaks). BlueJeans uses high-end Belden cable with thick, heavy-duty jackets that will resist future damage, and they don't cost all that much more.
