Hi all --
I'm moving to a new home that has 1 coax run into each room of the house (adding more is not an option). I currently have 2 HR-20's, an SD Tivo, and an H-20. I'll be adding an H-21 in the near future.
I obviously want to use SWM technology.
It looks like I need the older SWM LNB with the outboard SWM switch (to support my legacy receiver)
How easy is it to get movers connection to supply what you need?
Any tips?

I found it damn near impossible to get anyone at DirecTV to agree to anything install related. It all comes down to the installer you get. I got a good one, gave me everything I wanted (SWM) and fought with his supervisor for it. I gave him a nice tip. Best advice is to schedule the move, and when the installer calls tell him what you want.

Chance of getting any external SWM is next to zero.

Your SD Tivo is not compatible with the SWM LNB.....your only option is to use the SWM-8, which is a multiswitch that has legacy support for the SD Tivo (This setup uses the basic slimline dish w/a non-SWM LNB). However, these weren't meant for residential single-home installations, and you won't get one from an installer. They simply don't have them on their trucks from what I have heard. If you want to take advantage of this technology, you're going to have to buy the switch on your own (on ebay or solidsignal, etc.).
If you can ditch your SD Tivo, your other receivers are capable of using the SWM LNB, which most installers, depending on location, do carry on their trucks now. But D* rarely does SWM Installations on mover's connection setups because of the legacy receiver problem you face. If you really want the SWM, the only way to assure you're getting it is to buy it yourself. You can get an SWM Lnb pretty cheap now on ebay. But know that the odds of you getting an SWM for a mover's connection install are pretty remote.

OK, thanks for all the great feedback.
Let me propose something different.
Lat's say I took the legacy Tivo out of the equation.
Do most installers use the SWM setup when they can (if all receivers support it)?
If not, would an SWM LNB (bought online) fit on to a regular slimline dish?
Any other ideas?
I've still got 6 weeks or so to work this out.
Thanks!
What area are you in? That will give us some info. I don't know what the policy is now, but in my area (Mid-MO) they weren't installing SWM equipment for ANYONE in October. A lot can change in 3 months, but if there is an installer or member here from your area they might be able to tell you who your installer will be and what equipment they currently use.
If nothing else, you can probably get your installer's name on this forum and you can give them a call and see what they usually do.

swms are expensive and will not be used unless totally necessary. you can buy a swm or swmlnb and install it yourself

The non-SWM LNB is less expensive and cable is cheap, so it may be a tradeoff where they consider the installation time/complexity as a deciding factor.
The LNBs are interchangeable.

Try to get a SWM installation in Orlando. Was told you either have to be a new customer and/or have at least five receivers. I had a situation where the installer said he could not run two cables and it was SWM or nothing. Called Directv and talked to a supv. He said I did not qualify for a SWM and he agreed that if they could not run two cables then then would not do the install although the installer had all the equip for a SWM install. This was a result of a move. So yes, it is pretty difficult to get SWM as they would not do a SWM even if it meant losing the account.

I'm about 70 miles north of San Francisco.
They usually use Ironwood as the installer out here.
Anyone get SWM from them?
I'm tempted to buy an SWM dish on ebay and do it myself.
If I bought the dish, do you think the installer would put it up instead of whatever he brings? maybe for a tip?
Thanks

i just used dishmovers mover's 7 weeks ago and they installed the swm for me. the only problem they had was getting the dish to take the new software once they got passed this issue all went very smoothly.

Your chance of getting a SWM dish if you have a legacy receiver on your account is ZERO.
Your chance of getting a SWM dish with all SWM-supported receivers depends on your area, as SWM technology is still at different stages of use in different parts of the country. In some areas, it's been around for a while, they are plentiful, and the tech will use one wherever he can. In other areas, they are still fairly new, and will only use them when specified on the work order. The good news is that the more restrictive areas are loosening up, and we aren't too far away from it being completely up to the installer, as it is now for many places.
So, if you want a SWM dish, deactivate and remove any legacy receivers at least a week before you call for your Mover's, and your chances of getting one are quite good and getting better.
Otherwise, you'll get a legacy system and will need to purchase a SWM-8 and do the conversion yourself.

Well, I think I'll go ahead and buy the SWM dish & LNB and do it myself.
If for some reason I can't get it to work, then I'll move forward and call Directv for the Mover's Connection (after removing the legacy reciever from my account).
I'll put a separate round dish up for the 101 sat to use the legacy unit.

First Post, been lurking around learning about SWM and I can say that after 2 days of going back and forth with DTV and my local installers here in Forest Grove, OR they are coming tomorrow to do the SWM3 Dish install at my new place.
My original movers order did not authorize a SWM dish or switch, likely because of my two old legacy TIVO boxes being active on my account. So when the isntaller came to my new place (which has strucutured wiring I designed with SWM in mind) they told me they couldnt do a SWM and that they would have to drill 4 feeds thru my floor and into the side of my panel (WHAT! NO WAY! I told them) They said SWM's are only being given to new customers. So being my stubborn self, I talked to numerous "supervisors" over the last 2 days and after cancelling my original order, removing the 2 old boxes from my account, they made another order (including a HR23-700 to go along with my existing HR20) and the "system" then flagged a SWM3 for my install. VOILA!
My local installers couldnt believe that I was able to get this until they pulled up the new action # themselves, they had pretty much told me to give up trying and just buy the SWM8 myself. Just want to let people know it is possible to get this as part of movers connection.
